Andrew T Posted March 19, 2007 Report Posted March 19, 2007 My 2.3 has decided to start revving its nuts off. Started normally, but idled too fast when cold (~2200 RPM) when hot its more like 3500RPM ! I Quote
Andrew T Posted March 20, 2007 Author Report Posted March 20, 2007 Anyone have a view on this ? Still the same problem, apart from the idle speed everything else is OK. Been through posts on the throttle body as well as the ISV and checked all the hoses, which appear OK. What could make it rev too high? All the posts I Quote
Mabx Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 It is the ISV, I had it happen to me just recently. On my 2.3 the valve was stuck open and would not close, revs jumped to 3500 and stayed there. Fixed it unplugging the lead and undoing the 2 8mm bolts. Cleaned with carb cleaner and refitted. Andrew T Posted March 20, 2007 Author Report Posted March 20, 2007 Thanks, Now we're cooking! but which bit is the ISV ? I assume the Throttle body is where the cable actuator mechanism is, so where is the ISV relative to this ? Cheersandrew Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Idle Speed Valve looks like this. (see attached)George. Quote
Andrew T Posted March 21, 2007 Author Report Posted March 21, 2007 Just what I needed! Many thanks. (Mental note to self; buy a TIS). I didn't manage to look until last night, using a torch and mirror in sleet and sub zero temperatures. I'd guessed that must be the component but decided that sitting in front of a roaring log fire and watching Life on Mars was a better option. I'll strip it out tonight in the certain knowledge I've got the right bit. Quote
Andrew T Posted March 21, 2007 Author Report Posted March 21, 2007 Sorted! Whipped it off, (8mm nuts) looked inside no obvious gunge but the valve was stuck in the closed position. Lubricated it whilst sliding it backwards and forwards, refitted it, started up doubting that what I had done had made any difference and, behold, a nice 900rpm idle. Quote
El Dingo Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Whipped it off...no obvious gunge...the valve was stuck...Lubricated it whilst sliding it backwards and forwards.... Al in a thread titled "...Revving it's Nuts Off" :) Glad it's fixed. Did you take any pics? Quote
Andrew T Posted March 22, 2007 Author Report Posted March 22, 2007 Yes, read like that there does seem to be enough material there for a new episode of Finbar Saunders and his double entendres. Quote

Guest jon obrien Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 I had exactly the same problem on a '95 2.0l Galaxy, idled at 2000rp then when it warmed up was more like 3500 rpm. Ford dealer (Bristol Street Motors, Shirley, Birmingham) put it on the diagnostic, then said it was either the camshaft position sensor or the secondary air pump, Quote
