ATB Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 Hi all My Aux. / Booster heater has started kicking out piles of white smoke - can still hear the blower going and heater exhust is very hot to the touch so it's still working (and therefore shouldn't be logging VAG-COM faults at this stage) - from the FAQ I'm guessing that I need a new glowplug. It's going to be a couple of weeks before I can get to it to replace the glowplug, so for now I've removed the 25amp fuse (fuse box pos. 12) so the heater doesn't run at all. ANyone know if this is going to cause me any issues if I run without the heater for a couple of weeks? ThanksATB Quote

stevestorms Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 (edited) No - to both of you :16: Thanks ;) thats not much help ! Edited March 8, 2007 by stevestorms Quote
jkspoff Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 I shouldn't worry too much about it smoking, as they tend to do this most of the time anyway, mines always smoked after startup, I would just let it keep running, unless it is continuously doing it. Quote
mumof4 Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 No - to both of you :16: Thanks ;) thats not much help ! stevestorms Would be better if you started your own thread. The aux heater comes on when the outside temp is 10c or lower. Quote
Dave-G Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 (edited) Sorry Steve, I have re-read your post, I thought you had read the lengthy posts about it and assumed you'd read them all. No you cannot turn it on yourself... unless you modify the wiring of the car. It would be feasible to bypass the temperature sensor so you COULD switch it on - but there is no need for that above 10 degrees. You could spend a few hundred quid getting the gubbins and timer to switch it on at a given time before your trip. That option is used in countries much colder than ours. Much cheaper to pop out to the car with the spare key, start up, lock door, void insurance ooh - at least 10 times a year and getting less ;) Edited March 8, 2007 by Dave-G Quote
mumof4 Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Also - It's not your fault you have to get your post count up before becoming a full member He could have started a thread in trainee which would have been moved to the appropiate section , as it is he only needs one more post. Marian. Quote

Dave-G Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 I reconsidered the tone of my post nik as it looked like I was being argumentative when I wasn'nt - in the full knowledge that the post would show an edit had taken place. It was done almost spontaniously and I hadn't considered a reply quite so early Quote

ATB Posted March 9, 2007 Author Report Posted March 9, 2007 I shouldn't worry too much about it smoking, as they tend to do this most of the time anyway, mines always smoked after startup, I would just let it keep running, unless it is continuously doing it. Thanks - you're right it has always smoked a bit when starting, but now it IS doing it continuously! Someone else has also said it's a no-no to pull the fuse until I can repair it - can anyone tell me what damage I might be causing - considering the temp. around here is hovering around 10oC for the majority of the time I use the car? ThanksATB Quote
ATB Posted March 9, 2007 Author Report Posted March 9, 2007 No - to both of you  Dave - do you mean 'noooooooo - don't do it' or 'no - it won't cause any problems' Confused of Ipswich... Quote
Ivor Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 The heater should close itself down after 5 failed attempts to start up (flameout or whatever) so there should be no need to pull a fuse. You will then need to get it reset by the dealer or use a VAG-COM. Regarding manually starting it, this depends on the model - I can manually start mine by pressing a button. I can also program it to come on and defrost whilst I'm still in tucked up in a warm bed  . Quote

Thanks Ivor The heater is still working at the moment (the mini-exhust from it gets too hot to touch), it's just smoking massively, so I doubt that any fault code has been logged. My Brother works for Fruad at Dunton, so he can reset pretty much anything if needed... You may be able to programme your defrost, but mine's got a remote control I can use whilst still tucked up in bed - it's about 5'2", brunette and curvey.... Quote
Ivor Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 - it's about 5'2", brunette and curvey.... Wanna swap? :P Quote

stevestorms Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 (edited) Thanks all for replys, can I just say that if you read all the post it gets very confusing with different comments from different members, so I thought I would ask the question I wanted to know the answer too :-) if I had started a new thread it might have looked like I had not bothered to read all the info on this already said, which I have, and many thanks for all your help. best regards, stevestorms. Steve I sort-of see your logic, but by 'hi-jacking' this thread you've added confusion here, rather than at the top forum level - which can be just as bad! Also, starting a new thread means your question will be seen by everyone logging onto the forum and not just those that read this particular thread, so you've more chance of a comprehensive response. I find it always pays to read the FAQs first before posting ANYTHING and then if you do post the 'obvious question' be assured that the moderators will point you towards the relevant thread rather than answering the same question again. Remember also - the search facility.... Edited March 9, 2007 by ATB Quote

ATB, Sorry for Hi-Jacking yer thread, it was on the right subject of aux heater so looked like a way to answer my question, please fill free to jump all over mine in the future, and if I could have started a new thread I would have. I see you are new to the forum too however you were able to post. I am not 6 yoa and this is getting off to a bad start for myself as a new member which was not my intension! I hoped to get info and first hand tips from other galaxy owners which would help me learn about the vehicle and save some hard earned Quote
