Guest mattdf65 Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Hi I have a 1995 V6 Ghia auto owned since 1999, my problem is that I fitted a new battery on Monday and straght away the car started running badly. At first spluttering then stalling or almost stalling when stopping. My wife called the AA who think it may be the alternator. On Thursday it was booked in the garage for a service and MOT so I asked if they could have a look. They also think it may be the alternator but equally could be the wiring. Now when the car is first started it runs fine until the car warms up then the revs drop to about 500 and in starts to stall, not always but if you stop suddenly. My questons are: Why would changing the battery have caused this or is it just a coincedence. How much will a new alternator cost ? Is there any other possible answers Quote
dipsomaniac Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 car will have to relearn certain parameters after disconnecting the battery - that should take approx 10 miles. if it was ok before fitting the battery and not after you must have disturbed something. re-check that all of the wires are connected to terminals properly. alternator 92.50 on GSF Quote
bingo nightly Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 I have experienced a similiar thing with my V6. After doing some work involving battery disconnection, I found the car would start ok but would not tickover. I took it for a run which was quite difficult as the engine stalled at every junction. after about 4 miles I returned home and found the engine was now revving rhythamically from 1000 to about 4000 rpm.I switched off and then restarted the engine and hey presto, perfect tickover and running!I assume that something somewhere in the dark recesses has to "re-learn" its own settings. mumble_bee Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 could I just say.. the V6 ghia, requires a 150A alternator, which GSF do not list.for the VR6 Sharan they list a 120A one for Quote
dipsomaniac Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 (edited) thanks for clarifying that mumble bee. i took the info off the gsf site which looks like it could be incorrect as it only lists the 120 amp for the v6. Edited March 3, 2007 by dipsomaniac Quote
