Guest nettle Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Hi, I have a yr 2000 (newer model) Sharan with an electric window problem. Near side rear window will only go up and not down. ( I know it will go up as have now removed the mechanism). Works freeling in up direction. No click sound at all when the switch is moved for the down direction, either from the drivers switch or the passengers switch. I have searched the forum and tried to work through the more obvious things. Passenger switch is not problem as have swapped over with front one that works OK. Have checked the rear door wiring and loom - every wire shows electrical continuity through from motor to end of loom. Getting voltage to rear door loom - is there anything I can look for at the output to the loom? Does this "one direction" failure ring a bell with anybody? Is there anything else obvious that I should check other than looking for other wiring problems (bit of a nightmare) or trying a replacement drivers side switch unit? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Quote
big_kev Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 I would take the rubber gaiter of the wiring loom as it passes from the body to the door and physically inspect the wiring, most likely one is partially broken and is high resisitance not allowing enough current for the motor to work Quote

I have already had the gaiter off and cant see anthing wrong with the wiring. No obvious damage anyway. Thats why I tested with the meter, but I will double check tomorrow. Do you think that I would pick up one wire being higher resistance than the others on the meter? If its not this, any other toughts about what to try next? Thanks. Quote
NikpV Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 the thing is this is a classic broken wire situation - I have one myself (rear passenger side window up) but global closing sorts it (separate wire), right sort of age -everything so like big_kev says check the wiring again Quote

However, I do agree it seems like its probably a wiring problem. One other thing I forgot to mention - some time ago (and this window problem happened some time ago) we had a major leak under the passneger side from the rear wash water supply pipe. Garage sorted it out but floor was flooded. Could this have got into anything you think? Thanks. Quote
NikpV Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 IIRC the control box used to be under the seat but was moved to the bulkhead before your car was made (beware my memory I only remember my name because people shout it at me all day ) Quote
mumof4 Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 Forgive my daftness......i know i have a broken wire that means my rear passenger window dont work,...but....in my sleep sozzled brain,...if the window goes one way but not the toher..how can it be a wireing problem??,,could it be some sort of connection probelem in the switch itself?.....Ive had a window that would only go down and not up and it was the switch at fault......but how can it be a broken wire if it will go up and not down?,,surely gotta be a switch problem? ill go wake up now.. NikpV Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 (edited) brinnnnnng alarm call ! ! ! one wire up / one wire down / common and it appears in the case of global opening/closing 2 more wires ..... still could be switch but some wires get constant flexing  Forgive my daftness...... maybe Edited March 3, 2007 by NikpV Quote
mumof4 Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 ahhhh...ok.....thanks for that "i love you all equally." Quote
Guest nettle Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 one wire up / one wire down / common and it appears in the case of global opening/closing 2 more wires ..... still could be switch but some wires get constant flexing  window does not go down either from switches or from global closing. So I guess that means could be two wires broken (will have to look more carefully). BUT suggests to me that less likely to be the switch - is the switch effectively bipassed on global closing? - would you agree? or is global closing still reliant on the drivers master switch? thanks. NikpV Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 BUT suggests to me that less likely to be the switch - is the switch effectively bipassed on global closing? - would you agree? yes and global closing also bypasses the safety feature where if the windoow is tight/jammed the motor stops - global closing will force it shut if at all possible - course it may bea problem with the motor itself !! Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Where all gals fitted with global closure, I thought it was just the ghia,,,,,,,,,,,could you not pull the switch and use a jumper wire in the multi plug,,, just to rule out the switch  Quote
