As some one said....quite simple

Have serviced the vehicle and need to reset the indicator

As far as I'm aware, there are two service regimes,

1) 10,000 mile intervals/12 months

2) Extended intervals, as indicated by the service indicator.

I believe VW/Seat/Ford all use 10,000 mile interval version in the UK don't they?

Most VWs/Audis have the service indicator, but VAG don't actually seem to use it for service intervals in the UK. (as indicated by several colleagues who drive VAG vehicles).

Ford certainly don't for Galaxy.

I think you'll find the Shalaxy service indicator just counts out the 10,000 miles (or more likely 15,000 km) from the last reset, just to remind the driver. The problem is the majority of dealers never bother to reset the indicator if it hasn't been triggered before the service takes place and so it comes on at peculiar times (in my case it always seems to come on when on holiday 2 weeks after a major service!) Fortunately its easy to reset by anyone, but I can see it can frighten some people.

Unfortunately though , all the Seat and VW dealers I've come across are a complete waste of time and money. I'm sure my car(s) would be a lot healthier if they had never been anywhere near them, and they have a knack of completely misdiagnosing faults.

The indiactor on the Sharan (and it's derivatives) can be set to operate in two ways.

1) To show after a set period ie 10,000 miles in the case of the galaxy. Ford offer no alternatives to this. They fix it and tie in their validity of warranty within this regime.

2) VW, however, offer the option of a fixed service regime like ford or you can have what they call a variable servicing regime according to intelligence gathered by the system. Their warranty remains valid regardless of the option the buyer chooses.

There are pros and cons. If you drive in different ways, the time/length between services can vary above or below 10,000 miles. I know a someone who has chosen the variable option and went 16,000 miles to his service - though he knows some who have fallen short of the 10,000 mile figure.

VW offer this choice when you buy new and they adjust the system accordingly. I assume that when cars are sold 2nd hand, buyers and non vw dealers have no knowledge or this is forgotten.

Or so the theory goes.......

The point I was making is the Warranty requires dealer stamp AND entry onto the Vehicle History database on their respective systems.

If any anomolies exist, the Warranty is void.

From my point of view, I would service the vehicle myself EXCEPT the Warranty would be invalid and we all know that you have a serious probability of needing it in the first 2 years, AND it's a Company car.

I have made many comments on Dealer incompetence throughout the Forum, and it grates to leave the car with imbeciles.

Just one further point, also covered previously (to death):

The service indicator uses a number of parameters to indicate when service is due.

Not just mileage covered since last service reset.

My own tends to come up at 1700 miles before service, which equates to about 9200 miles.

One of the giveaways in terms of the time elapsed parameter is the number of Imports and stored vehicles that appear to require their first service very prematurely (around 3000 miles even). This is because they are stood for months, and the service indicator believes that the oil (and possibly other consumables) has expired.

That is exactly what I have been tryin to convey. This system is far more intelligent than we give credit to it and gathers information intelligently. It's just a shame that VW are the only ones ot of the bunch that allow this to be used to its full potential!

I there any way of changing the Ford standard service indicator to the varable type. After warranty, this type could be better, and services could be determined by the vehicle. I understand the same thing happens will the VW Golf which can be changed by the garage.

Just to add my 2p worth. At approx 8700 miles, my Galaxy is telling me that I need a service NOW. This is about 1 year from the build date, but a good 6 weeks to go before the anniversary of the purchase date. Does something happen if I ignore this warning?

The service indicator for my old Sharan used to come on at odd times, but the the VW garage I used never remembered to reset the clock.

Hi,

Just had my Galaxy serviced and they didn't reset the service indicator - can I do this myself? I have tried holding the computer reset whilst switching on the ignition but it doesn't work?

Any ideas?

Don't press the computer reset, it is the trip meter that needs to be held in. Also make sure that you open the bonnet, then close it, a few minutes before doing the "reset" operation-if you don't do this, the computer thinks that no work has been done on the engine so will not reset the service indicator.

VW Sharan - 02 1.9 TDi.

We have moved to Variable Servicing. Among the benefits is tha tthe oil used seems to have had an effect on fuel consumption as well - would it really?

Variable Servicing still requires the car to be serviced at least every two years, but I'm hoping I'm going to save money on it.
