The black cover at the very top of the engine shown here is the rocker cover, it has the oil filler in it. It possibly just needs the 10mm bolts nipping up a tad. The gasket is a moulded rubber masterpiece - which would probably cost an arm and a leg

That clip wants replacing dave.... :o

If it is the rocker cover gasket Maz its a doddle and the majority of oil leaks on any engine are usually from this. Even the tester stated it was from there and they dont cost an arm and a leg if you shop around. Just dont go for the real cheapies because they're rubbish.

Eh wot clip? :o

You'll need a 1'4" drive socket set with a universal joint for one of the bolts at the back Maz. Space is seriously tight at the back of it - which suggests to me that the last time it was removed it did'nt get replaced correctly for that very reason by a lazy mechanic. The bolt I refer to is below that shiny dome thing which is behind and above the oil filler cap in the picture, and is the 'opposite number of the second bolt from the right at the front end.

Hey Dave thats dead useful ......havent done one on the Galaxy yet but on every other car I've owned. Is there an oil breather Maz will have to disconnect?

Hi MO4 - i dont want to confuse the issue but.......

i thought I had a leak from the same - and went to fraud who said I cant buy the gasket separately and had to buy the whole rocker cover ( re-mortgage please ! ) However VW would sell me one on its own - or was it the other way round ???

I took the cover off (and theres one real pig of a bolt at the back right side so a flexi drive will be needed) and found that the gasket itself was fine and dandy - infact Id be surprised if many break as they are substantial rubber jobbies.

You could just try nipping all the bolts up - wipe down the back of the engine and keep an eye on it.

The only other possibility is a leaking EGR valve - which turned out to be my problem and a mechanic I know said not to bother replacing it untill it gets REALLY REALLY bad.

good luck

Yep - its on the top at the other end - easy to access

umm..where??..and what does it look like..im afraid im one of these that need pictures.I wont do it at the weekend....as i have a feeling the car may be in bits for a couple of days....so will try and get it done next week....

Will take me a while to clean everything up as believe me when i say there is oil everywhere.....

ok Maz - you have an upside down baking tray here yea? A black one yea? Turn it up the other way to empty all the oven chips out yea?

Now one end has a hole in it to put oil in - you know... where you filled it up? The other end has a circular 'moulding in it with an approximate 1" pipe coming out of it - pointing to about 10 o clock. The rubber pipe can be pulled off it if your nice and firm with it.

I WOULD HAVE MODIFIED THE OTHER PICTURE BUT THE EDIT HAS EXPIRED

Roight, been having a gander to see if i could see where the oil was coming from, ive taken some pics with my phone which have been sent to nik who uploaded them for me (Thanks Nik) as my camera is U.S.

Now...in this wee pic,in the centre, you can see two holes, covered in oil i might add, is there supposed to be anything in those two holes. Also above them two holes is another which you cant see in the pic.

In this next pic,is the whatever it is where the black rocker cover thingy is attached to,now the half you see is covered in black oily gunge, the left half of it is clean...is it supposed to be like this?

post-3737-1174834496.jpg

Now, everywhere i see down the right hand side of the engine bay is oily gunk, in the top pic, the oil that is on the silver thing covering the holes, feels not as oily as oil should be, but it is not as gunky as the rest of the black crud which is over everything else. There is no visable oil leak on the drive so im guessing that any slow drips are puddling in the undertray.

I have tried tightening up the thingy bobs on the rockercover and i cant tighten them any more than what they are already tightened.

Now the oil level hasnt moved. So whatever leak i have is verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry slow and i reckon by the amount of the stuff all over that its been going on for a wee while. And i reckon any leak i have is either spraying upwards or is starting high up...as if it was low down, how would it get so high??..(thinking out loud here)

I need to know , what that silver thing is in the top pic please.

Thanks.

Maz
