del Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Got a 2003 130BHP 1.9Tdi MANUAL 2003. 40k on clock Averages about 34 to the gallon, this seems excessive.Ford dealer just serviced and says can't find anything "obviously" faulty. One mechanic thought 34 was quite good! I would be interested in what others get. The car starts first time and seems to run very well, no smoke etc. Thanks Quote
mumof4 Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Here we go..petrol heads vs oil burners here we come :o 34mpg for a diesel..is not excessive..i have on the odd occasion got 51mpg out of mine and i usally average about 41 to 48 mpg. i would say it depends on where you drive...rural or urban... but would say that 34 can be a bit low to be honest as mine is usually way higher than that..though mine is a 115bhp diesel..so yours may be different. Wouldnt worry about it to be honest.. speed you drive..etcc..all factor into it. Quote
whitty Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 (edited) mines around the 40mpg mark according to the dash in reality i'm sure its slightly less but ive only had it a week and not done any great runs in it to see if it changes or to check it with a calculator and im not commenting on the zx last time i dared check it was round the low 20's Edited February 16, 2007 by whitty Quote
malcolm.dobell Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 I get (on '04 plate 130 Alhambra) 26 around town when I'm caning it (we have 60 and 70 mph speed limite within 0.5 iles of the town centre)32-34 around town when I'm not. 40 - 46 on a long run. these are from the computer. I don't monitor via mileometer and fuel put in the tank. Fuel used by the auxiliary heater is extra so figures are worse I'ts much better (faster and more frugal) than a 2.0 petrol I once had. I'm convinced I could see the fuel gauge going down as I drove at motorway speeds Hope this helps Quote
adrianf. Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 34 ish around town and 40 ish at about 70mph on a run for me Quote
Dave-G Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 If you like to be first off at the lights, and all town work etc thats not too bad for a manual. You could knock 3 or 4 mpg off that for an auto if you have to be the one in front... like me  Quote
AndeeeH Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Ford's quoted figures for the Tdi 130 6 speed manual are: urban 34 mpg, extra urban 51.4 mpg and combined 43.5 mpg. :( Andy. Quote
del Posted February 17, 2007 Author Report Posted February 17, 2007 Ford's quoted figures for the Tdi 130 6 speed manual are: urban 34 mpg, extra urban 51.4 mpg and combined 43.5 mpg. :( Andy. I was expecting about 40 average, best I have ever got including steady run on motorway is 35 mpg. Even allowing for a heavy right foot, mine is nowhere near these figures. Does anyone know of a diesel specialist in the northwest area, or should I go back to the main dealer at Quote
mumof4 Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 If you keep your right foot up a bit when trundling along on a motorway at just under 70..then you will see a rise in mpg.A lot of the time on short journeys i only get about 34/36mpg...its on long journeys that you will see it climb.. As said before..a lot of things factor into it..driving style, speed, lead foot etc....if she is driving well and there are no problems then i would leave it be...but is up to you if you want to throw money at frauds. You said in your original post that you thought 34mpg was excessive..what were you expecting? On the dash display you have 2 settings where mpg is concerned..your total average that you have done and what you are doing at that time. Dont forget...the figures quoted in the manuals are a guide..the best you can expect i reckon.. Quote
NikpV Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 wonder if a deteriorating MAF (4 years old +40K) will start to affect the mpg before performance - it certainly affects performance and mpg in the latter stages of its life. Try and find a 10 mile run set the Cruise control at 50-55mph and see what Mpg you get. If you want to throw some money at it I would change the MAF(yoursrelf - simple job see the FAQ - cost about Quote
italiastar Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 Best I've ever got from mine was 50 mpg - I didn't go over 50mph. Worse was 29mpg - on french M-ways 130 Kph fully loaded and aircon going full blast when car was new - oddly similar journies now return 40 MPH. I don't often drive around town / in traffic, but MPG in those codition gets to mid to high 20's. I test drove a petrol one - at 50 MPH it was returning 18 MPG. Quote
