Possibly a glow plug fault if its only when cold. Does it start then run ok when the car is warm? Edited by Dave-G

Starts fine and will pull fine after 20/30 secs just seems that initial pull away is not quite right or is it just that like that anyway

Check from post 51 here mate - one shows a photo of my glowplugs in a MK2

glowplug bit of the thread

Looking at the front of your engine after you remove your top cover... you will see a black plastic tube running horizontaly along the upper front of the engine. That tube has four "legs" that seem to go down to the front of the engine block. Pull it firmly with both hands either side of each 'leg and it will come off to expose the glowplug connectors. Alternatively you could see if the hot end of one looks different to the others or use a light bulb to check for a circuit through them. (!2 volt just to be sure you dont run an extension lead from the house)

To remove them you will need a 10mm tube spanner or ultra deep 10mm socket.

hi, i had this problem it was the glow plugs, it sounds as if it is, when you first start the car it sounds like a very heavy knock? then give it a min or two and it runs fine, i had this trouble and had the glow plugs changed around
