Guest Goldeneye243 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Firstly hello to the other forum users! I recently bought a Sportka, and soon noticed that it seemed to go through petrol quite quickly (even though it has got a small tank - Had to fill it up quite frequently). I have subsequently checked the economy and it appears to only deliver 31-32 mpg, which for the sort of driving that I do in it is exceptionally low (I have also had a civic coupe and corolla T sport that returned 36-39 mpg) Does anyone else have a sportka, or even a streetka which is either better or the same? Mine is going for emission checks soon to try and put my mind at rest. Bit of a shame really cos despite having the turning circle of the QE2 other than the economy it is a great little car! Cheers.
Guest DervMan Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 A few pointers. First off, it's brand spanking new, and this will have an impact on fuel consumption. Secondly, the 1.6 Duratec has been set up to put emission control above everything else. Now I know squirting in more fuel when it could have shut it off (on the "overrun") seems daft, but apparently, this is kinder to the trees - when we changed from our Mondeo to the Ka, I found that I could lift off a significant distance further from the traffic lights / roundabout / chap in a Nova GTE in the way / whatever. You may well find that as your driving adjusts to the way the Sportka's donk behaves, and of course as it loosens up, things will improve. For what it's worth, Kermit's early fuel consumption was dismal, with a low point of 25.7 mpg  at the 4,500 mile point. However, since then, we've only approach 30 mpg a few times. Kermit's largely city bound which makes a big impact on fuel consumption, too. ;) The direct link to his fuel consumption chart is here is you don't want to trawl through the website looking for it.
Guest morty999 Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 hi all, i also recently picked up my Sportka, and i have noticed that the fuel consumption is very poor!i will admit that im not a slow driver , but im no erratic driver either. I have been deliberately filling the tank right up to see what kind of consumption im getting. I am also doing a fair amount of travelling on the motorway However, the car is only doing around 23 - 24 mpg! Surely this cannot be right? I have previously owned a fiesta zetec-s , and the new shape fiesta in the 1.6L model, and both deliver far better fuel consumptions. Apart from the poor fuel consumption i luv the car! cheers :)
Guest DervMan Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 It does seem rather low - how many miles has the car done?
Guest morty999 Posted April 11, 2004 Report Posted April 11, 2004 hi The car has only done 1000 miles, however, the fuel consumption has got better!im now getting 30-31 mpg, but when im not using the motorway the performance drops to 26 mpg! most of my mileage comes from using the motorway, so 31 mpg is not too bad. (still getting to grips with the massive turning circle though...lol) :(
Guest DervMan Posted April 11, 2004 Report Posted April 11, 2004 It's band spanking new, though! If Ford still use "running in" engine oil, and you have an optional service at the 1,500 mile point, it's a good thing to get it done. Otherwise, well I'd recommend you change the oil every half service interval if you do a lot of city driving. /I know people will say it's overkill, and perhaps it is, but for the cost of a tank of fuel it's worth it in my opinion/ As I've said, our Endura-E's fuel consumption improved quite noticably over the first year we had him (we bought him from 3,500 miles).
