Guest neil_wiles Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 Has anyone experience of the 1.9 TDi alternator belt tensioner shaft wearing through the housing and a rattling noise at idle speed, as mine is trying to destroy the whole unit. Do I have any major work to be done to replace the unit or is it straight forward ? Quote
Guest Betterthanwalkin Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Did you have any luck fixing this problem as i have the same thing on my 99 tdi. or can anyone else help as the dealer is talking about air con pump. sounds expensive. Quote
Guest T120 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 When you say housing; which housing please?????? :o Quote
Guest Betterthanwalkin Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 On tickover the tensioner is bouncing sounds like the engine is fallin to bits. their's also a loud sqweak like dry bearings. i have had the belt off, the tensioner and alternator spin freely and whatever it is under the alternator spins free also.(is that the air con pump) :o Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 The Housing is the complete casting on the front of the engine. You have to remove the mounting of the alternator, compressor and steering pump then four bolts hold the casting complete with the tensioner assembly fitted into it. The removal and replacement of the whole unit should take less than four hours as no pipework needs to be removed therefor no fluid replacement is needed. Also at the same time it is advisable to replace the drive belts as the flapping of the tensioner and angle of contact will have worn the belt and failure shortly after would be normal. The cost IIRC was about Quote
Guest Betterthanwalkin Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 Thanks for the reply Had it fixed today by VW garage, new tensioner and two new belts fitted Quote
