Has anyone experience of the 1.9 TDi alternator belt tensioner shaft wearing through the housing and a rattling noise at idle speed, as mine is trying to destroy the whole unit. Do I have any major work to be done to replace the unit or is it straight forward ?

On tickover the tensioner is bouncing sounds like the engine is fallin to bits. their's also a loud sqweak like dry bearings. i have had the belt off, the tensioner and alternator spin freely and whatever it is under the alternator spins free also.(is that the air con pump) :o

The Housing is the complete casting on the front of the engine.

You have to remove the mounting of the alternator, compressor and steering pump then four bolts hold the casting complete with the tensioner assembly fitted into it.

The removal and replacement of the whole unit should take less than four hours as no pipework needs to be removed therefor no fluid replacement is needed.

Also at the same time it is advisable to replace the drive belts as the flapping of the tensioner and angle of contact will have worn the belt and failure shortly after would be normal.

The cost IIRC was about
