Ok..now im calm.....can let you know what happened to me on way to school....i lost control of the car at 15mph going round a bend on my estate..i went to steer to the right and the car went straight on in a skid..i panicked and kept steering to the right....car hit the kerb with a hell of a bang..went into the middle of the road..gained a bit of traction so i steered left and skidded back into the kerb with another bang and stopped with the car at an angle..to say i was shaken is an understatement.Kids thought it was great..but i had to get out of the car i was shaking that bad.initial inspection shows no damage..but i havent fully checked the car out..going for a fag now.

Although you say you were doing 15 mph Maz, this was obviously still too fast. The first reaction of anyone new to driving is to brake and thats where you lost traction. A lot of people think that ABS is there to stop them more quickly which is not the case, particularly in inclement weather. I did exactly what happened to you a while back in a 2 week old Mitsubishi and felt exactly the same. So what should you do? Perhaps others would like to correct me but, how I drive may be totally different to how others drive in these conditions so I dont expect anyone to follow my advice;

If the ground is slippery when walking to the car? .... yes ...... do I really need to drive?

Always try and prevent the wheels from spinning when accelerating away .... change gear as quickly as possible to prevent loss of traction (pulling away in second is usual).

Always drive at a speed to match the road conditions ...if the car is "twitching" then you are driving too fast but do not brake, just take your foot off the throttle gently.

As you approach a bend, change into an appropriate gear and brake gently BUT do not brake whilst on the bend ...... if you feel the car skidding then steer into the skid but again do not apply the brakes and take your foot off the throttle gently.

If ever you do have to apply the brakes hard, the ABS is only there to help you steer when the wheels want to skid .... you will feel the ABS cut in when the brake pedal starts to move up and down slightly and it will feel and sound very rough ..... just concentrate on steering out of trouble.

If you dont have ABS then by using cadence braking ..i.e. on / off repeatedly, you can steer out of trouble.

There are many other techniques to deal with various conditions but hopefully others may like to add their own ideas.

Remember if you're skidding then you're going to fast. :lol:

Believe me..i wont do it again, the road went from slush..to what looked like snow but was compact snow/ice which i didnt know.Lesson learnt.expensive one as i have a tyre with a damaged sidewall now..so its another tyre required.

Sorry to hear you have damaged the tyre but this could have been a lot worse. Suggestion - get the tyre dealers to do the tracking as this could have knocked the wheels out of alignment and will save your new tyres from premature wear. You may as well get them to balance the front wheels to see if that will get rid of the wobble. Hope you have calmed down a bit now Maz.

its snowed here (Newcastle under Lyme)

not enough to cause any real problems (in my opinion) - just caution when driving.

i 1st drove in the snow this time last year, and took the approach of slow and gentle, worked fine and had no problems.

out of interest i did take it to the sixth form car park (upper sixths allowed on there after school) - to see how easy/hard it would be to put the car into a skid --- VERY easy - mind you, the car park was not gritted, and was compacted snow (Ice)

i then went to a hill that had not been gritted and attempted to climb it - 5mph would get you up, 10mph or more and you would slide sideways!

(in both cases there were no cars and i was near nothing i could cause damage/injury to anything or anyone)

i basically teached myself on how to deal with ice/snow.

something else to note - the road noise is quieter on ice - if the car suddenly goes quiet do not brake! let of gentle, and follow bleenos advice.
