NikpV Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 just wait for the thread when i have to remove the undertray....drain the sump...take old sensor out..then put new one in..then refill with new oil..oh what joy it will be. will start to rival the windscreen wiper linkage thread soon. I know ... none of this 'my oil level sensor is u/s, had to change the oil anyway so dropped the undertray drained the oil and changed it, put undertray back' for you :16: Quote

Dave-G Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Almost a shame you cant get pink undertrays really :16: Quote
mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Well ive got pink dustcaps   ..will have to do for now.. Sensor should be delivered today...going to see if i can sort something out this morn to get the front wheels off the ground.. Quote
Dave-G Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) Good - concrete blocks or slabs on each other, bricks etc have all been part of some diy' guy's kit at some time in their lives. Make "step ups" too if you can girl. If the kerb is one side it at least has a rigid base on one side that wont topple over. Edited February 13, 2007 by Dave-G Quote
mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 wont going up onto blocks..damage the wheels?..unless you mean make some sort of ramp to get up onto them? Quote
Dave-G Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) Well yes you could use a scaffold plank maybe as a ramp to a concrete block, with the plank resting on a brick to make the end of the plank about the same height as the block. However as you approach the block it could then lift the other end of the plank. Much better to place it or a paving slab in front of a block - drive onto the slab/plank then drive onto the block. I dont beleive I'm actually advocating this, but you do like to be treated as one of the lads? whitty Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Don't want to sound lika an a** but wouldn't a jack and a set of axel stands be far safer ? Quote
mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 probably..but with limited funds...where coming up at the end of the month is MOT and TAX and also needing a service...i need to rob a bank!!..i cant service it myself untill i get this oil level warning off..axle stands may not cost much....but im nay bottomless pitt..and where i think i know it will fail the MOT...i have to keep funds for sorting them probs out.. mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Ok..parts in..off to see what my spondoolies bought. Quote
mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 This little beauty is what cost sooooo much and by god it had better fix the problem!! Quote
Dave-G Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Axle stands would indeed be ideal - but money is tight. I have done this for some 35 years without any problem. It dont look good I know - but it works for very rare jobs under the car.I give the car a good old wobble around before getting underneath to be sure its stable. Get your oil too before you start Maz. mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Been having a gander at the V6 oil change thread in FAQs....is it the same for a diesel?..all the drain thingies the same? Quote
whitty Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 fair enough it's your call @ the end of the day on axel stands or correct safety equipment i just always feel Quote
mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 whitty..i understand what you are saying..but it is my choice as to how i get the front of the car up and right now i am doing what i can to do that safely..money is an issue considering what work needs doing to the gal to get her thru the mot..and with 4 kids and no money in the bank i am doing what i bloody can to fix her! And i dont work as such as i am a housewife, and the peeps on here know that i will not attempt anything that i think may be beyond my capabilities. And i will not cut corners where safety is concerned so please like some peeps on here have faith in my capabilities. mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 anyway...found this thread.. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...p;hl=oil+change Quote
Dave-G Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Be sure to use the gloves... oil from a diesel engine has a load of soot floating in it. ANY anywhere near your fingernails will have you looking like a lorry mechanic for a few days - I kid you not Maz. Now i'm off for a bit. ATB with that. Quote
mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Thanks Dave...and thank you for all the info you have given me. Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 ...when i did my booster heater, i jacked the left side of the car up onto solid house bricks (not the ones with 3 holes in),, 3 bricks under each wheel, laid out next to each other. not trusting the handbrake and "P" position on the auto box, i then got an extremely large block of wood to chock behind the rear wheel, and yet another brick, in front of the front tyre. (tyres chocked on the right hand side of the car) i did the booster heater, then tried to drive the car off the bricks - forgetting i had chocked the wheels -- the car wouldn't budge, so proved its safety there. if maz did a similar thing, i think there's little worry of the car rolling off. (and im not saying it beats Axel stands - but will do) MJR Quote
whitty Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 wasn't your capabilities i was questioning im sure you are perfectly capable of doing an oil change ect, i was questioning the advice you were given on how to get under the car and pointing out that if you are going to be doing more of your own work having or borrowing the right tools will halve the time it takes, halve the stress, make the job easier and will be alot safer, changing the oil you should fin a dodle not a hard job,  you will find the oil filter on the pd engine is a cartridge type so you take the top off the holder remove old filter and replace with new one then put top back on  where as the v6 petrol would be a canister type filter so slightly different other than that basically once you have done one oil and filter you will never pay a garage again   i think you will be surprised at mot the galaxy isn't that bad underneath and shouldnt be too many scary bits at worst i'd expect a brake hose or somthing minor on a car of your age  mot aint all it's cracked up to be if tyres are good windscreen is good brakes work and you haven't got to many funny knocks from suspension  i think you will be pleasantly surprised and it should go through can i make 1 suggestion  mot it before you do anything you will be miffed if you have to do the same job twice i.e took the wheel off to look at brakes were ok so put wheel back on then you mot it and it fails on somthing else and you have to take the same wheel off all over again  any good mot station will give you 14 days to do repairs and give a free retest  so mot the old gal take it away do any repairs and the service bits then take it back  so you only get dirty once that way ! mumof4 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Thank you for your concern and advice whitty..I am having to do the oil change now as i am replaceing the oil level sensor which goes into the sump.I am trying to make the oil level warning go away ..after i have done this..then i will concentrate on getting it through the MOT. I bought the oil filter today and will get the oil tomorrow..i am trying to get hold of some axle stands, but MT on camp wont let me borrow theirs..after paying for oil..the filter..and the level sensor on top on the oil pressure switch..i will have spent nearly Quote
