Great forum, loads of interesting stuff (and I've now realised I have a booster heater which has never worked). But I need to raise the tyre issue - I've driven myself mad looking at web sites all night and am now confused.

I need to replace the 2 front tyres on my Galaxy, a TDI130 Zetec on a 2004 plate. But I can't find definitive information on the full correct spec. I reckon there is only 1 original tyre on the car which is the usual Dunlop SP2020. The tyre is a 215 55 R16 95W - is this the correct spec ??

I've come across many tyres of this size but several variations on speed and weight rating (mostly lower).

Advice please - I'd rather not go for Dunlops after reading so many negative comments about them but I'd prefer to stick to a reasonable brand but I havn't find many that match the spec

tyres have been covered many times...so many diff types out thre..nokians..dunlops...215/55/R16 is correct..extra load or reinforced.

95W..sounds good to me..

I am currently useing FULLRUN tyres which are classed as budget tyres but are pretty damn good.

You can see some info on speed ratings on the link below - "w" is rated at 168 MPH - which the Galaxy cannot acheive.

I'm not sure if "trainees" are worthy of the search feature - so here is a link to my search results for "tyres"

I have a 2001 115 bhp galaxy fitted with Dunlop SP Sport 2020E 215/55/ R16 95H. I have now covered 97K miles and had the car from new. I'm not a tyre expert but these seem fine. Front ones tend to last approx 30K miles. The back ones I changes at 90K simply because they were starting to look perished.

Top tip !! - just checked the fuel filler cap - no info there but I double checked the door pillars which I checked last night in the dark, and guess what - a label on the drivers door pillar. Label says: 215/55/R16 95 o. 97 rf.

I reckon rf is run flat, and either weight rating of 95 or 97. Interestingly no mention of speed rating ???

Think I'll follow the majority opinion and stay away from Dunlops. I'm going for a Bridgestone ER300's which do a 97 in V or W.

The tyretest.com rating is quite good except in the snow, and somehow I doubt there will be to much of that whe I get there at Easter for a skiing holiday.

Thanks for all advice

RF means reinforced (tyres can also be labelled as extra load) which are needed because of the weight of the car.

I have put 4 Fortuna F2000's on mine which I feel are better than the Dunlops that were on.

I am sorry to bring up this topic again folks but I am having extreme difficulty finding any tyre in my region for my galaxy 2006 model. It presently has goodyears on and when I have taken it to several local dealers including my local ford dealer they have all told me that the specification I need is only made by goodyear and they have none available. Car has now been off the road for over a week whilst they are sorting this out. What's going on? Am I being lead a merry dance or are the new Galaxies really that specific about which tyre they can use? It seems to be the XL that is causing all the problems. Any suggestions please?

My Tyres amongst many others will provide them from about 20 different manufacurers (make sure you tick the box for reinforced). Or ring up any of the big chains and tell them you need re-inforced tyres, they will happily sell you them as they cost more. If they try to tell you that they're not neccesary it means they don't have any in stock. Edited by Andrew T

What size tyres are they, e.g. 215/55 R16?

If it's the new model Galaxy, do you have "run-flat" tyres fitted?

Stuff the local ford dealer if they can't tell you the truth. amost every tyre producer is now producing this size and spec tyre - though some won't be getting imported to the UK.

Most "discount tyre" specialists have lower cost new ones in some pretty obscur names in stock. The words " reinforced" or "extra load" needs to be evident on the correct tyre.
