smoggy7 Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 hi guys sorry about the aux question again but can someone give me any advice i had the new heater replaced in march 2006 , i know that when you first start the engine smoke do come out of the little exhaust pipe for a little while but i have noticed it is coming out when i come to a stop in traffic and was flashed at from another driver to warn me again thinking that the car was on fire lol, now what could be this problem as it is only 10 months old ,should i take it back to the dealer as it is under their 12 month warranty , it is only just started to happen so please any help here guys thanks smoggy also i would like to thank you all for the kind condolences we received from you all when my mum passed away suddenly last year and we are just getting back to normal after the whole shock of it many thanks smoggy Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 are you sure its real smoke - and not just condensation? if its under warranty - i would let the dealers worry about it...but given its only 10 months old, maybe its being over-fueled - or the glow plug is already on the way out! iv just done our glow plug - and its completely smoke free! smoggy7 Posted February 4, 2007 Author Report Posted February 4, 2007 (edited) hi matt, we are pretty sure its smoke and it smells, my wife has just told me that it only happens when its really cold , first time we seen it we were like the others omg fire lol but i got out and noticed it was coming from the little pipe and we all could smell it inside the car not very nice at all , so i might just give the dealer a ring tomorrow and book it in for them to see it , apart from this the temp is ok goes to normal in a few mins and the car goes ok so thanks for the input smoggy also matt if it is over fueling which part is this causing it Edited February 4, 2007 by smoggy7 Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 if its being over-fueled - its possibly the metering pump - you can sometimes hear this clicking when its working (you might have to listen hard to hear it) it basically controls the fuel flow to the booster - and if its pumping too much, you will get smoke, and possibly a stronger smell of diesel. something iv i do - is only start the car once all passengers are in, and doors shut. sometimes if you start before the door is shut, fumes get in the car, and as you say, arnt pleasant. another possibility is the glow plug isnt getting hot enough, although if its only 10 months old, the glow plug should be fine. smoggy7 Posted February 5, 2007 Author Report Posted February 5, 2007 hi matt, ok ive booked it in as this morning more smoke and diesel leaking from aux heater dripping onto the floor, it smokes when you come to stop engine running, also when i stop the engine and look the smoke is still coming from the exhaust pipe from the heater and dripping diesel, i have phoned the dealer so will let you know cheers mate smoggy Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 ok, let us know what the out come is -- sounds like it might be over-fueling, but could still be the glow plug lol MJR Quote
smoggy7 Posted February 5, 2007 Author Report Posted February 5, 2007 hi matt, thanks for that mate, ok it is in the garage as we speak so will or should hear something in the morning fingers crossed eh, i did not mention any findings that i had just told them it was belowing smoke so we shall see what their findings are will let you know soon as ok thanks smoggy Quote
gazza007 Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 Mine's smoking like hell again today, stinks too. Funny filled up with Sainsbury Diesel Saturday rather than usual Tesco, I recall a lot of smoke about 6 weeks ago when I used Sainsbury for Fuel. Or it could need a new glow plug, anyway I will have to wait & see, need a fill up later this week. Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 so we shall see what their findings are... "oh you need a new car mate - that will be Quote
Dave-G Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 Mine smoked and dripped diesel too - till I changed the glowplug in it. Quote
smoggy7 Posted February 6, 2007 Author Report Posted February 6, 2007 hi guys, havent heard nothing as yet but as you know the dealer will not dismantle the unit to get to the glow plug, their answer will be ok we will change the the whole unit i bet any money on it if it is the glow plug far from useless as the time it takes them they rather just change the whole unit, so just waiting now for the call to tell me what it actually is, my theory is its pump is injecting to much diesel which isnt getting burnt so it overflows the chamber so it has to leak out and smoke like hell, apart from this heater the car has been excellent, i seen the new s max yesterday what a car very nice piece of kit i must say more buttons than a swiss army knife lol, i dont like the shape on the new galaxy but guess what it hasnt the aux heater under the passenger side thank godlol speak later smoggy Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 yes, the new smax is nice - was looking at one at fords of winsford yesterday - its just a little too small for us, and IIRC the towing ability isnt as good. but nice car :16: on a new unit - i wouldn't expect it to take long to change the glow plug - esp with car lifts. but like i said before - i would expect the problem to be more fuel related - given the age of the new unit. smoggy7 Posted February 6, 2007 Author Report Posted February 6, 2007 hi matt, i just come off the phone to the dealer and all they told me was it is an internal fault with the heater so not sure which part has gone will ask when i pick it up in the morning part ordered but cant get here until tomorrow will inform you later thanks smoggy Quote

smoggy7 Posted February 7, 2007 Author Report Posted February 7, 2007 hi matt, yip it is correct they changed the whole unit i checked it before we left the garage brand new unit and got the receipt for my service history so i think you are correct they will take the old unit to their workshop now and replace the glow plug for someone elses car poor gits oh well happy now car was boiling in just a few mins earlier so cant complain thanks again smoggy Quote
del Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Has anyone any idea how much effect on fuel consumption the aux heater can have? My 130bhp Tdi 2003 Manual only does about 34mpg regardless of how I drive it. I too have sometimes experienced a diesel smell outside of the car and can relate to some of the smoking issues. Quote
