PhilT Posted February 3, 2007 Report Posted February 3, 2007 Recently experienced a vibration from the rear of the car. If it happened suddenly I'd put it down to losing a balance weight, but this was slowly getting worse as the days went by. Got it over a mate's pit and checked everything underneath but couldn't find anything lose, so jacked up the wheels and spun them to check the bearings, again everything seemed OK. Then as he was spinning the wheel and I was standing behind I noticed that the radius wasn't true at one point. Checked carefully and in one 6" section about 1" wide right on the inside of the tread there was a bulge and the tyre was so worn that you could see the wire carcass! On further inspection of the sidewall it looked as if the tyre had been kerbed at that same point, which might explain it. Big frightener though, I really wouldn't have thought I could miss something like that! Put the spare on PDQ (but let some air out of the duff one first, in case it went bang when I took it off!) chromedome Posted February 3, 2007 Report Posted February 3, 2007 I had the same thing on a car a few years ago. I had rumblings and all sorts of noises. The tyre eventually blew out whilst I was driving round a long fast bend, frightening.................... Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 hi phil, never heard of that sort of thing before, and pleased you spotted it before it popped! so jacked up the wheels and spun them to check the bearings, again everything seemed OK. just asking....what are you looking for or listening for, when checking your wheel bearings - as i think one of mine is on the way out. Grumpy Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 Last summer I was in Cirencester with the family & caravan and was getting a slow speed wobble in the steering so I took the car to a tyre & exhaust place to get the fronts balanced. When they took one front off there was a lump of tread missing (inside of tyre). As you can imagine, I was:- a) relieved it had been found:( much poorer in the credit card dept 20 mins later! I dread to think what might have happened if it had popped with 1200kilos of caravan hooked on the back Quote
mumof4 Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 sooo...a wobble on the steering means wheels are unbalanced?or maybe tracking is out?...as i get a wobble on the steering at all speeds..had discs checked and they were not warped....so maybe....needs balancing or tracking sorted?..hmmmm... Scorpiorefugee Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 Hi Phil, I had almost exactly the same experiaemce a few months ago. The rear tyres had done (guessing a little) in excess of 60K and looked at first sight as if they would go on for ever. Only thing I had noticed was a steady increase of road noise over 10K or more so didn't pay too much attention to it until by pure chance I noticed the one part of the NS rear tread completely shot, the rest otf the tyre looked good. The other rear was still very usable with no trouble spots. Hot footed to the local tyre place and popped a couple of cheap Avons on to match the ones on the front (45K and going strong) and so far, no real signs of problems apart from a trace of feathering on both rears after about 10K. Hopefully, you have the same experience. Good luck, Ron. Quote
bigdaddy Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 Mo4 its not your tracking, that would cause your gal to pull to the left or right. Quote

MJR if your wheel bearing is on its way outyou will hear a 'droning' sound as you are driving if you are getting this, jack the car up so wheels are off the floor(not being patronising) and hold the wheels at top and bottom and se if there is any movement repeat on all 4.if you find movement try to tighten if already tightreplace it/themhope this helpsBiscuit Quote

I have had this happen before on 3 occasions, (and on smaller cars) but they never got that bad, and was told this was due to swapping wheels from side to side, (so they are running backwards compared to when originally fitted) Quote

MJR As well as play in the wheel Matt, you will feel a "notchy" feeling as you rotate the wheel slowly. Quote
