foxyfowler Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 This topic has been raised several times and I though it best to start a new posting as this time I have the information that should assist all of you needing to change a faulty sensor. I was inspired to take photos aftre reading a post regarding the auxillary heater which included step by step instructions + Photos, on how to replace the glowplug. Absolutely brilliant. I eventually got round to replacing the faulty water temperature sensor on my 2001, MK2 Galaxy 1.9 TDi. It has been giving intermittent readings between 50 to 90 for some months. I had searched the forum on several occasions, unsuccessfully, to try and find specific information as to the exact location of this sensor and the best method to replace it. Anyway, having gleamed a little information I set out to first find and then replace this illusive part. Firstly, I tried to purchase a new sensor before I commenced the work. The Ford Parts Department informed me that there are three different types used on the Galaxy and that they have different colour ID Quote

foxyfowler Posted February 3, 2007 Author Report Posted February 3, 2007 Hi Big Matt The very informative post that I found on changing the glowplug in auxillary heater was posted by Ivor on 11th June 2005; Post # 37481. I'm not sure how to copy in the link but try this. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...=3623&st=80 If it doesn't work I could email it to you as I have copied it into a Word doc. Foxy Quote
dt1 Posted July 31, 2007 Report Posted July 31, 2007 This post was extremely helpful, thank you. However, having spent many hours lying under my Gal I suspected the sensor location was reasonably accessibly from beneath the car, which it is. So it's a much easier job from the bottom without needing anything except a screwdriver to help push the wiring connector off the sensor (it has a latch which when pushed with a flat screwdriver pops off quite easily). The photo with the red arrow shows the location of the sensor from beneath the car (left side of engine), and the green arrow points out the plastic clip which holds the sensor in place. It's easy to pull out by hand. As already suggested it it best to leave the cable connected because water pressure forced my sensor out unexpectedly and I got a bit of unpleasant coolant shower! So once the clip is removed move to the side and expect a sudden burst of coolant as you pull the sensor out. If you are prepared you should be able to avoid the shower I got.Regards, David Quote

leebob Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 Noticed my temp reading went from 90 to 50 on a motor way run Saturday night then the same happened yesterday... came on here 1st thread i searched answered my question! Installed Vag Com tonight and fault code 17664 engine coolant sensor appeared! Another job for the weekend. Just read it should be the black sensor just after part number now! Quote
leebob Posted April 3, 2013 Report Posted April 3, 2013 HELP.... I've only gone and broke the alloy the sensor clip goes onto is it called thermostat housing?? ... Pushed it with screw driver and snapped it off. Need to phone Ford tomoz to find out how much it's going to cost now. Quote
Phlipphlop Posted January 31, 2017 Report Posted January 31, 2017 Just had this symptom on my gal (2004 1.9 TDI) temp gauge reads normal..... drops to zero then after a bit goes to correct temp. After changing the temp sensor in their galaxy, can anyone actually confirm that it was definitely the temp sensor that was at fault? Not an ecu signal fault? If so may look at changing mine, but haven't had this one long so might try and hold off a bit. In addition.... also had problems with my fuel gauge. Read 1/8 of tank when I bought it, put in £30 it went to just under half a tank, used that to 1/4 of a tank then filled it up. It read full however since then after a short while of driving fuel gauge drops to zero and no refuel pump sign on dash. Now always reads full at start of journey, then empty and have now done 130 miles on this tank. Had a gal before (same type/age) and never experienced that, would expect needle to have dropped off full and be above 3/4 somewhere. Could this be a fuel sender problem as well similar to the temp sensor issue or a common earth fault that could affect both? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated as I've never seen this before. Thanks. Quote
