Hi everyone.

I currently have an intermittent problem with my Galaxy (2002 MK2 tdi 115)

About once a week the cabin fills up with fumes whilst driving for about 30 seconds then with the windows open they clear>

I think the fumes are coming from the rear heater area inside the car but it is hard to tell, the fumes smell like paraffin so i think it must be something to do with the rear heater under the car. The heater appears to be working normally except for when this happens.

Any ideas help ? ? ?

be very unlikely for the rear cabin heater to drag in fumes! it's a recirc unit only! are they exhaust fumes? or just a bad odour? possible heater matrix leak on the rear unit?

The fumes are very acrid/diesel like, not like normal exhaust fumes and slightly plastic smelling. Could it be drawing fumes in from under the car into the cabin if the rear heater is faulty?

the only way the rear heater unit could draw fumes in is if the rear foul air vent behind the rear quarter panel near the rear light has failed? IIRC this vent should draw air out of the cabin and not in! or you have a dodgy door/window seal? allowing fumes in? or the fuel tank inspection plate under the carpet is loose? or the fac control speed resistor pack is breaking down/burning out? hence the acrid fumes!

You are probably getting fumes from the booster heater which is located beneath the rear kerbside of the car. It burns diesel (That smell) when the temperature goes below 10 degrees - 5degrees on the older models You will hear a jet engine type of noise while it is operational.

Is it possible that you had a rear door or window open prior to smelling the fumes?

I have checked all the door seals and they all seem ok, i'll try and take off the rear interior panel tomorrow to see if there is anything amiss or the rear vent is blocked open, it just seems strange that the cabin would fill up at speed and only occasionally.

The occasional bit is probably due to it only dropping below 10 degrees outside temperature. After the engine has warmed up it goes off

I understand about the heater only coming on under 10 degrees etc but this has only happened when the engine has been up to temperature and i've been driving for about 40 miles ish.

aux heater will stay on allbeit at a reduced power

Hmm... head scratching

ouch splinters :)
