apparently the disconnecting battery trick doesnt work on boOster heater fault codes :) they need clearing by either VAG com or connecting to Fords own diagnostic machine (FDS2000)

Jaroth a sevice engineer for the aux heaters implies that the fault codes are local to the heater which would agree with wolfies info .....

ok, just read this from the beginning.

 

it sounds like theres two problems,

ONE - the booster heater is not firing up, (95% of the time this is glow plug failure)

TWO - there could be a problem with the heater control vents - given little (no?) hot air is coming in, EVEN when the engine is hot.

 

davewill...i notice your in Newport, Shropshire - your only 23 miles from me, iv got VAGCOM, and will plug it in for you, to do a fault check on the heaters/boosters/flaps etc lol

 

we could meet half-way, just to do a fault code scan - which might help sort your problemos amigo

 

(you wouldn't believe the amount of spelling errors i made while typing this post!)

Booster heater was working for the first time this morning - it made a real difference. It didn't seem to work last night, but maybe it was too warm.

 

Anyway, the point is that it worked without being reset by VAGCOM - which I'm pleased about but also surprised!

 

Thanks to everyone who's posted on this, and apologies for slightly hijacking this thread........

ok so we run VAGCOM on Dave's galaxy,

 

booster heater faults.

 

Over-heat temp - there were 5 of these faults

 

we also vagcom'd the heater controls/flaps,

 

there was a fault - short or open to ground - but all flaps/control are working, although the directional control - did seem to behave a little Dickie - but it was working.

 

there was a tiny bit of heat for a moment, but then went cold again, and no heat comes from the rear blower inside the car.

 

i reckon the coolant isn't getting round the matrix system - resulting in the booster heater overheating, and no heat from any vents.

 

possible causes - blockage or pump failure.

 

what do you lot think

I reckon you could be right Matt, with my relative Steve mentioning the impellor becoming detached from the water pump being a common problem, then there's a good chance this might be it. On the other hand, perhaps Wolfie could answer this ........... wouldnt the car overheat then?

LATEST UPDATE

First of all thanks to MattJnr for his help yesterday, it is much appreciated. VAG Com is a wonderful tool!

Basically as Matt suggested we came to the conclusion that no coolant was reaching the Aux heater, or even any heater!

 

On the way back from Matt to home (25miles) the car overheated 4 times. Each time i had to stop, carefuly open the coolant bottle and let pressure out. It was then good for about another 3 miles before the same happened again

 

I managed to drive it the 8 miles to the Fraud dealer this morning, and explained VAG COM to them :P

 

Just had the call to say yes its definately Water pump, as impellor has fallen off - (Steve you were right) ;)

 

New water pump, cam belt tensioner etc

Hiya,

 

Just spent the apst hour reading this thread, I have the same problem with taking 25 minutes to get any heat through.

 

What I also have is the noise of the heater fan (when set to top speed of 4) sounds like it is acting normal, but I dont get a great draught of air (hot or cold) through the vents.

 

Is there any common fault that would give this fault ?

 

Also, the glow plug for the aux heater - where do I find it on the car ? How do I check it ? - Do I just replace it regardless of condition ?

by the time you have checked the glowplug you might as well change it ......

I had trouble with the heater of my Galaxy, it would either be cold after a run, or would be slightly warmer than cold, then i would bash it and it would start working but then it might be blowing hot full heat and you couldn't turn it down. In the end i replaced the whole unit

Hi all. Brand new member so be gentle with me. :P

 

Got exactly same problem with the no heat from vents in car even on hi heat and overheating only when car is driven at high speed or with vigour!

I have a 2002 1.9 TDI ghia. Already had the car in to Fraud who ran a diagnostic check, cleared a lot of previously stored codes including 5 over heat temp fault codes then returned it to me with the advice to keep an eye on it!

Judging by all the other post's I have searched it would point to the water pump. The car is on 120000 miles so due a cam belt anyway so I'm going to bite the bullet and have it all done.

Will post back when the work is completed to help other members with same problem.

thats due to the length of his name! lenghten yours to fill the box and it should do the same
