Northerner2910 Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 My wife has a problem with her Galaxy. She can start the car as normal, however the knob on the gearstick will not go in when she tries to change to drive or reverse. When the engine is off she can push the gerastick knob in and move the gearstick back and forth no problems, when the engine is running gearstick knob wwill not budge and the gearstick will not move at all. Problem started this morning, got it in gear eventually. When she got where she was going and tried to change into reverse or drive it wouldn't go. She went into London, came back 3 hours later and its sill not working. Looking through the forums and certian things have been suggested auto-inhibitor, brake sensor. Any advice would be gratefully recieved. Quote
NikpV Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 definitely brake pedal switch - get under there with some wd40 - if needed to replace it costs about Quote
Northerner2910 Posted January 17, 2007 Author Report Posted January 17, 2007 Sorry, brake pedal switch. How do I go about replacing if I need to. By the way NikpV, I found your links useful with jobs I've had to do with the Galaxy before. Thanks. Quote
NikpV Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 cheers There are some hints - tips in the faq about this, from what I can remember its relatively straightforward, disconnect - rotate to remove and insert (can be tricky) reconnect and reset/adjust the switch. Quote
Northerner2910 Posted January 17, 2007 Author Report Posted January 17, 2007 NikpV Would it be "hints for brake switch installation"? Going by that it appears that the switch is under the fuse box, I thought the brake pedal switch was on the pedal? Excuse me if I'm looking at the wrong item. Quote
NikpV Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 thats the one - on the brake pedal mechanism (under the fusebox - under the squeaky floorboad behind the kitchin dresser :P ) Quote
Northerner2910 Posted January 18, 2007 Author Report Posted January 18, 2007 NikpV Changed the brake pedal switch. We can now change to drive or reverse, excellent. Or so I trhought until I locked the car and went to go in. The brake lights on. What do I need to do please? Quote
Northerner2910 Posted January 18, 2007 Author Report Posted January 18, 2007 NikpV Think I'[ve sorted it. I engaged brain, switch would have been showing brakes are on (i.e. pedal depressed so lights should be on). Checked the piston from the switch that rests on the pedal and it hadn'[t fully extended. Slight tug on it and checked that it extended when I pressed the pedal, it works. Just started the engine changed gear, put back in park and lights work. Excellent. The switch was fiddly to put in though can easily be done by hand. Thanks for your help. Quote
NikpV Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 phew - I was just going to ask if you had reset it as here  glad its sorted though Quote

Northerner2910 Posted January 22, 2007 Author Report Posted January 22, 2007 Having a problem with the brake pedal switch I replaced. I've reset it as advised and its still not working every time. I have to pump the brake pedal a couple of times to get it to work. Could it be I was sold a faulty switch(new from Europcarparts) or that I need to reset it again or possible give it a squirt of WD40? Quote
