Apparently the clock sitting on top of the dashboard of my MkII should have a light bulb. How do I replace it?

The clock sits in a square of plastic that looks like it clicks into a recess on top of the dash. Should I prise out this square, or try to get the clock out of it on its own?

Behind the clock, up against the centre of the windscreen is a black knob or button. Anyone know what it's for?

Finally, I'm trying to buy a new trim for the driver's door handle. A chap on ebay is selling them in three colours;

Anthracite, Flannel Grey and Beige. Is that the full range of colours for interior trim?

Mine appears to be anthracite, by elimination, but the ebay pic doesn't look much like the colour in my car.

Hi Rockdoctor,

Unfortunately, I don't think the clock has a replaceable bulb. I had my clock removed on '04 plate Galaxy at the weekend and there was no bulb in the back. I think it is an led.

The 'button' is a sunlight penetration sensor. It is used in conjuction with your air conditioning system.

I've read somewhere on the forum that these trims on ebay are dearer than the ones from Ford. Would enquire at your local dealer and get the one that matches your exactly.

Thanks for the advice about getting the trim from Ford.

It's still quite tempting to get it from Mr ebay because it will come to my door, whereas Ford means a trip at the weekend in London, and I don't get much time away from the kids.

At least I know what the black button is now!

As for the clock - I'm not quite clear.

It's not supposed to have a bulb or an LED - it's not meant to be illuminated?

So you used SMTs (surface mounted LEDs) from ultraled.co.uk as an aftermarket add-on?

Or did Ford have an SMT in there that has failed?

I got mine off Mr Ebay, i got the whole set and the bezels aswell..yes was more expensive but as you say, the luxury of coming to your door....Easy to fit aswell.

Reminds me......need to do the old ones in pink now ive scraped all the old cover off them ^_^

Mine isn't illuminated, but there is some light on the dials so I can see what time it is (in the dark).

So is the "light on the dials" made by LEDs?

I'm a bit baffled why mine is totally dark.

I guess I'll have to pull it out of the dash and have a look.

hi rd

yes they are surface mounted LEDs square type

they are what is in the dash clock and the dials and the cc unit etc..(this is what fords use)

but fords use the green ones

so i would of thought the ford ones are no good in your clock

is it only your clock that does not light up

does your speedo and door switches light up etc..

is your dimmer switch working ok etc..

just see your new post about speedo lights, what else is not lighting up

I'm gonna take another look tonight (only had the car a short while).

As I remember, all the illumination of dials in the dash is by ordinary lightbulbs, which dim nicely with the dimmer switch.

In the dark the clock is invisible against the windscreen, and has no illumination at all.

I wondered if the previous owner found it annoying to have it illuminated, right in the night-time field of vision, and disconnected it.

I'll have to take a look at the weekend when I have some daylight to see what I'm doing.

Faffing around at 11pm after kids and wife have gone to bed is hardly ideal!

hi m8

the lights in the dash clocks(speedo) again does not have bulbs

has surface mounted leds/smds around 50 in all yea i know what a pain

as for the clock on the top of the dash,if its still working, then the only way i can see it not lighting up

is (1).the smds are faulty or (2) he might of cut the wire for the lights on the clock it self

easy way to check is to take out the clock if no wires are brokern, take the clock apart very easy..m8..if you have a good multi tester ,flick it on to diode test.you will see on the smd`s on one corner has a small cut ,this is your plus leg.and see if they light up,if they dont then thats your problem m8.. if they do..then they is a fault ,somewhere on the wiring, also check the wiring going in to the plug ..make sure your getting volts there, when you turn your side lights on

what part of sw london are you in by the way

The clock tells the time fine - it's just that you can only see it in daylight.

I'll get it out this weekend and take a look.

I'm in sunny Southfields, SW of Wandsworth town centre. Where are you?

Well, I got the plastic square, containing the clock, out of the dash.

It had a cable plugged in the back with a 6-pin socket.

There was a blown bulb (not LED) with a blue plastic holder and 12/1.2 printed on the base.

I guess this is 12V 1.2W.

Next stop Halfords.

Make sure it's not too bright or it will produce an annoying reflection on the windscreen when night driving. (that the 1.2 bit I'd say)
