It's me again... this car is driving me up the wall.

Got into it this morning and the front screen was well frozen. I flicked on the heated front screen and sat waiting.... forever! Definitely not working at all. The switch lights up as it should but that's about it. It probably has never worked since I got the car 6 months ago.

I haven't had the time to check anything yet but can anyone recommend the first things to look for? I assume fuses will be the first port of call. The only other thing I can think of are the two connectors for the screen. Perhaps the car has had a new screen at some point and a dozy glass fitter has forgotten to reconnect the thingummybobs. Both sides of the screen are dead.

Any suggestions welcomed. For a mint condition 2002 car with a full service history this is so annoying. All these things just shouldn't be happening yet. I expect the new Galaxy that has nothing to do with VW and Audi will be far better. Those pesky Germans once had a good reputation for cars but in the last few years this has changed dramatically. Mercedes are now plastic and troublesome, Audis are an utter nightmare and VW's reputation is no longer the same. Only BMW seem to be keeping their heads above water. Anyway... I'll end this now before I get really mad.

Sounds like my car.......

I thought my heated front screen was duff yesterday. Seems I was wrong, however, I couldn't find where the maxifuse on Level 2 (according to the handbook) is located. Also relay 23...wherever that may be.

YES! I get the clicking sound when I press the switch. Is that good? Does that mean the fuse and relay are OK?

My word, you are in the wars! ^_^

If you can hear the relay clicking that eliminates a few components. It means your switch is OK and the multi-function control unit is activating the relay. That leaves the wiring going to the relay (which does incorporate the fuse gooner52 mentioned) and the wiring from the relay to windscreen. Also even if the relay is clicking, this could still have burnt out contacts for the screen supply. The fuse is located on the multi-function ecu which is where the relay is, behind the driver's lower dash trim, I think.

How good are you with a voltmeter? This could help you diagnose where your fault lies. I don't think it is the screen because you say neither side works and there are two elements. They are both supplied with the same 12v feed from the same relay (unless both sides of the screen are disconnected, of course).

im not the best person to ask on this

wolfie would be your best bet,

but i would defo start by checking the fuse/relay etc...

also check make sure that if the screen has been it been wired back up

and a heated screen was fitted

A common fault is that the earth makes poor contact at the top of the screen just above the internal roof trim, especially when a new screen has been fitted, my was stuck on with mastic! There are two live feeds at either side of the screen, half way up, it's easy the first time to assume one is live and one is ground.

On mine the heated screen will only work when the engine is actually running, it won't work with just the ignition turned on.

I thought this was standard to save the battery

Talking about heated screens has just reminded me....brief hijack here....my left wing mirror, the heated bit doesnt work.....elements?..is it on the same fuse as the screen?..just thought id gen up before i go pulling out all the fuses again.

No different fuse. Front screen is on a 50A maxifuse. Mirrors are on Level 1 iirc - can't remember which fuse.

ahhh..when you said ...no different fuse.....i thought you meant..no they on same fuse....not no, they on different fuse.

but is there a diff fuse for each wing mirror?

I am pretty sure that the heated mirrors are both fed from the same fuse.

All the heated mirrors I've ever seenn have the element integrated into the glass.

If that is the case then I don't see why you can't replace it...unless of course it is part of the mirror body.

maz hi hun

both heated wing mirors work with the heated rear window switch

if one is not working then ,you will need a new glass..hun

fuse 51 in the cjb is for the heated rear screen and wing mirrors btw small blade type

upper left hand side the the cjb

Thanks again for the advice folks. I've been working 12 hour shifts so I haven't had the chance to investigate the matter yet but I'll report back when I've had a look. Littledaz, I do have a good voltmeter and can use certain features on it but I'll check the basics first before getting into the egghead stuff. Hopefully I won't need to go that far. Fingers crossed it'll be a fuse or something.
