Quote
NikpV Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Leave them off and they are safe enough - how long will it take for maintenance to turn up ? Quote
Grumpy Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Sorry if this seems obvious, but its either a fault in the house wiring or in something plugged into a socket. What I would do is unplug everything connected to the affected sockets and replace the fuse in the fuse box (or reset the trip if you have those). Then if the new fuse doesnt blow plug things back into th esockets one-by-one until the fuse blows again, then dont use that item again until checked. Hope this helps Quote

mumof4 Posted January 15, 2007 Author Report Posted January 15, 2007 spark..bang..poof!!.....all sockets upstairs dont work......and maintenance wont be out till tomorrow..not classed as an emergency..i cant turn the sockets off at the sockets as they dont have on/off switches on them..and seems daft but we are not allowed to touch anything other than the trip switches in the box.,,the trip switch to the upstairs sockets i have turned off.....i cant do anymore than that. NikpV Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 as grumpy says - unplug everything and try turning on the trip - ifit blows again then its the wiring - turn the trip off - add apliance turn on until it wont - last one added is the problem Quote
NikpV Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 spare underwear needed as you turn on Quote

Hope this helps This house is substandard..has subsidence and will be condemned after we move out alongside with most of them in this street....mod property for you!!..which is why they dont do much to them....they only repair if they have to..there are a total of 6 sockets upstairs and 5 downstairs.....(2 of the downstairs ones are in the kitchen. This is a 4 bed house and not enough sockets in it.. Quote

All downstairs ones are fine. Quote
Grumpy Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 If an unused one has charred then definatly leave it for an expert Quote
Guest wolfie Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 ok do as grumpy suggests and unplug everything up stairs, then reset the trip if it hold it's an applience gone down, it it still trips you have a wiring fault/problem! with the trip off check around the sockets for signs of explosions! burn marks, soot etc! and knowing kids check for signs of dampness! how's you hot water heated? immersion heater? check to see that it's on a seperate circuit? if it isnt! switch it off and try the sockets again! Quote
mumof4 Posted January 15, 2007 Author Report Posted January 15, 2007 does the trip stay turn on ? trip stays on..even though i think it shouldnt.. ;) Quote
Guest wolfie Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 to be on the safe side flick the switch and kill the upstairs power, if there are signs of charring on an on used socket it would be safer to kill the circuit till some one can look at it, after all the important sockets are working as the pc's still switched on and the tellys still on ;) Quote
gregers Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 phone up and scream at em that its unsafe because youve got kids, you say one of the sockets has charred?without anything plugged into it sounds dogey to me,i do know that the new consumer units are extremly sensitive(no doubt its the orriginal wireing)and they replaced the fuse board and left the old wireing,so if theres a problem it will keep tripping, mine does when a bulb blows. Quote
mumof4 Posted January 15, 2007 Author Report Posted January 15, 2007 Kill the upstairs power..so no lights???...gawd.....means camp out in front room then as..aswell as my daughter being scared of the dark..as am i... ;) Quote

This is a very old house....and looking at the stickers on the trip box,the wireing hasnt been checked in 4 yrs! I have told them all you say....but as they said to me.."..do you still have electricity..."...yes.. "do you stilll have heat"...yes.. do the downstairs sockets work...yes.... so..not an emergency. is only an emergency if you have no heat and it is winter and you have children under the age of 5,If there is no hot water and you have children under the age of 5If there is a total loss of electricity and you have children under the age of 5. Everything changed when it went to prime contract..before you could get sum1 on the end of a phone who would then send sum1 out..now it is all bloody call centre and strict guidelines as to what is classed as an emergency!! Quote
gregers Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 no leave the lights on your only flicking the trip to the upstairs sockets thats all,UNLESS THATS THE PROBLEM POWER AND LIGHTING OFF OF ONE FUSE ;) Quote
gregers Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 landlords have to check on the gas appliances every year and a certicate issued, but dont think the electrics need to be checked yearly,i know mine havnt in the 2 years ive been in this house, the only thing now is that any new installation is carried out by a competent or approved electrical engineer and anything new done in a kitchen or bathroon then they must have part p. Quote
gregers Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 certificate soz i was having a steve wright moment there ;) Quote
Guest wolfie Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 if theres a problem it will keep tripping, mine does when a bulb blows. the reason it now trips if a bulb blows is because the trips are far more sensitive than the old rewirable fuses, as the bulb fails the filament becomes ionised causing the gas in the bulb to become conductive allowing a higher current to be passed through it! this in turn shorts out across the lead in connections hence the trip goes due to this sudden increase in load! this all happens in milli seconds and a wired fuse takes far longer than that to over heat and burn out! I await to be correct as I'm sure there are those that can put it more scientifically! Quote
mumof4 Posted January 15, 2007 Author Report Posted January 15, 2007 gas is checked..electrics havent been since we been here..2 yrs now Quote
gregers Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 i think ur right wolfie,i seem to remember watching that on how its made on the discovery channel very enlightening(no pun intended) ;) Quote
Guest wolfie Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Kill the upstairs power..so no lights???...gawd..... sorry, reverting back to my old ways! power...sockets, big amperage stuff! none of this wimpy 5, 15 amp lighting stuff Quote
