If you only use the van for going to and from work then you will be exempt from paying any tax at all now, but you need to let your tax office know before the change in April.

Hi Alex

I don't know if I have miss read your post, are you saying if you "go to and from work only in a van " then you won't pay any tax?

I have not read about the matter, but knowing the tax side of things I cannot see this to be true.

When I had a company van, the traveling to and from a place of work was classed as priviate milage and was "NOT" tax deductable, only from work to the customers ect and back to the place of work, was classed as bussiness mileage.

But hey they might have had a change of heart.

can you pleas confirm your statement?

(you will be exempt from paying any tax at all now, ) does that mean before, or after April ?

The higher rate of tax is if you use the company van privately other than going to and from work

I forgot to mention obviously if you lie about your mileage

and you have a friendly boss

then you can just put all your private mileage down as travel to and from work

the tax man never checks.

err he will when he find out how much of the expected revenue from this latest change is not bringing in! mind you if I read it correctly he will be after companies with big fleets where the easy money can be grabbed! one driving complaint, a speeding or parking ticket at the wrong time when your not meant to out in the van and your toast! it's up to you to prove that you havent been abusing the sytem on a regular basis not for the tax man to prove you have!

im assumming that the age of the van is now not taken into consideration?when i used to have a company van it was over 5 years old so i ended up paying the minimum ammount

a chap i worked with about 10 years ago got picked out by the taxman(eyes closed and a pin stuck in a list of names)they went back 7 years and he left there office oweing about

If you use it only for trips to work and back you dont pay any tax at all.

You can even use it occasionally for private use. This link might help clarify.

Either you or your employer has to let them know before April, when the new regulations come into force, worth saving

Yep gregers the age of the van doesnt matter anymore, even if its a old Escort van you still get taxed on an extra

No problem, i just thought some people might not know and then get a big surprise in April's wage packet.

I must admit i am surprised at the goverment doing this, although if they get the majority of people saying they dont use it for private use they may re-think it.
