muppetofdoom Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 Hi people, just used my galaxy (1.9td giha x 1998) to drive to work, and the steering on 2 occasions when turning left seemd to stop or at least become very stiff/tight for a brief second !, scary to say the least. It was raining quite a lot but didn't go through any major water as far as i'm aware !, and the trip is only about a mile and a half !, Any help from you wonderful people here would be greatly appreciated, (pretty please) :blink: Quote

muppetofdoom Posted January 10, 2007 Author Report Posted January 10, 2007 not too sure about under tray, although did have cam belt go hence a bit of surgery a couple of months ago by a garage i'm never going back to as thay were not impressive to say the least, so they may not have put it back properly, will have to check, just bit more info, once i got to work and parked up i swung the steering from end to end a few times while stationary and it was fine, all help greatly appreciated guys(and gals) :blink: Quote
mumof4 Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 mmm..it is scarey when the steering goes funny....mine went poof....and i said hello to a tree. As said before..check undertray is there and fitted correctly....could be anything..the fact that it went stiff/hard to steer means the power steering was not working for that period of time......could be just the belt slipping.. Have you checked the power steering fluid level? Checking whilst stationary means there is no load on it at all. could be power steering pump/valve...blocked/clogged/nay working properly... Quote

seatkid Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 On the diesels, its a known problem. When an engine undertray has not been refitted (usually following a service), water can be sprayed by the wheel onto the power steering belt, causing it to slip and lose all power assistance momentarily. Check the undertray is fitted. If its not, get it fitted and go threaten whoever left it off with a lawsuit as its pretty dangerous. Quote
Dave-G Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 Agree - it sounds like the unimpressive garage left it off. One from either mk1 or mk2 diesel will fit, so get yaself along to a scrappy - you have had a warning about how dodgy it is to leave it off. Quote
Guest greenfingers Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 When your cambelt broke, was the car towed anywhere? FWIW, it is documented in TIS that if the towing eye cover is not replaced, this too will cause the p/s belt to slip in the wet. Quote
