Offside rear door on my 2002 tdi Galaxy has two points of resistance when closing it from fully open. As you push it past each point of resistance it makes a loud snap/crack noise. Door otherwise performs as normal. It is nothing to do with lack of hinge lubrication. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas what it could be?

Do all the doors have the same two points of resistance? if so try lubricating the door check strap mech!

Possibly could be that one of the hinges is not bolted on properly? Needs tightening up? Just a thought - worth checking at least.

thought the hinges on galaxies were welded on - check the bolts holding the strap mechanism, our drivers door showed exactly those symptoms and the two bolts on the door side were loose so it snapped back in just before the door closed with a loud click :-)

they are but there is a bolt on the pivot pin that locks the two halves of the hinge together, undo this and in theory you can lift the doors off, leaving one half of the hinge on the A/B post and the other half on the doors!

Hi again, it's nothing to do with the lock striker. The points of resistance and the noises occur well before the door shuts. It seems to be coming from the hinge areas and I can't see any bolts loose. When I have time I will investigate further. It is definitely nothing to do with lubrication as I have sprayed it to death with WD40. All the other doors are perfect. I am worried that it may be down to a dodgy repair that I don't know about. The car certainly looks as if it has never been pranged and the paintwork is nice all over. Thanks for your suggestions.

if it's as I suggest? the door check mech is a metal on metal part! WD40 will not work! you need to grease the mech and ensure that the bar where it passes throught the friction/clamp device is well coated!

Perhaps you can put your finger on the strap as the door closes ~(you said its nowhere near closed when it makes the noise) and feel if it clicking  be careful though :P

Hi

had the same problem on front doors

try to tighten the retainer strap the links between

the doors and pillars onthe door end

it stopped the snapping/cracking noise for me.

hope you get it sorted, gets annoying after a while doesnt it?

YIPPEE!!!

It's fixed! I checked the brass coloured linkage at the bottom of the door, removed the rubber shroud thingy and there was 1 bolt missing and the remaining bolt was hanging in by its last couple of turns! Funny thing is, I've had a mystery bolt lying around for ages that I knew came off the Galaxy... I popped it back in its hole, tightened them both up and my door works like new!

That's one easy fix!

Thanks all for your help (especially BISCUIT!)
