MatTdi Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 (edited) BDM2510,I would agree with NikpV the water pump is the most likely culprit. When the pump died on my PD I got identical symptoms as yourself, I was able to drive around on short journeys with no problems but when under load the temp would rise and then fall when stationary as the rad fans will remove the heat quickly, the PD engine is so efficient it generates little extra heat, this can be seen in the winter when the booster heater will cycle in and out with the engine running to maintain the water temp required for efficient heating. When the engine is at temp if you check your lower radiator hose it will probably feel cold as the pump is not circulating the water, the heat rises and you could on mine hear boiling noises in the top of the block, this is whats causing the extra pressure in the system and causes the system to vent.... and dont let any garages try and fob you off with a head gasket fault unless you witness the test yourself. Have a look at http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...ic=4461&hl= Sorry for the long post Good luck M@ Edited March 1, 2007 by MatTdi Quote
Guest BDM2510 Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Dear Mattdi, Thank you for your posting and valuable info. I have book the Galaxy in for next Wednesday, and have discussed the problem with the owner. He will run a diagnostic test to ensure fans are kicking in etc. Automatically he thought there could be air in the system. When I was towing and the load lessened, the temp would drop reasonably quickly from 125 back to 90, so I think the fans must be working. My original thoughts was the water pump as from owning the vehicle since Nov 06, I felt the temp inside the car was pretty poor compared with a VW Sharan I owned a few years past. It was only underload that I saw the difference. When not pushing the car or taking the foot of the accelerator the guage behaved normally. Put some pressure on up the hill and the temp would soar. As I said previously coming back with the caravan, no problems at all. I`ll copy your listing and let the owner know before Weds. I hope we can finally put to bed as this is a an A1 Galaxy with the factory fitted skirts, 17 Ford alloys, leather, and all the toys. I have to confess that as a tow vehicle (temp problems aside) I was very surprised as against my old Allroad the handling, turning, reversing was a complete breeze and until the hill climb pushed along at below 60mph without a flinch. Anyway thank you very much and fingers crossed? Regards BDM2510 Quote
fosterman Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Had similar problem with my 2001 1.9 tdi, explained to local (reputable) garage. Having read various threads, suggested to garage that water pump at fault, however, they proceeded to check auxilliary pump (which was clogged), then thermostat, which was 'sticking', decided to check radiator, which needed reverse clean. Finally settled on faulty water pump, and replaced offending item. Thought, after 4 weeks of inspection, problem may be resolved, however, with '6' up, went over Pennines on M62 in 6th @ 70mph, and guess what, temp hit 130. Am now thouroughly frustrated as same happened on return journey, and having spent more than I can afford to resolve problem am now somewhat perplexed as runs smooth as you like for majority of the time. Think just put up and shut up & save up for S-Max and hope no probs with that. Quote
Guest BDM2510 Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 Dear members, Finally back from the Ford dealer. Fans and thermosta working Ok. They put on a diagnostic check and error codew appeared which they have removed. They checked the water and original red antifreeze was present and no signs of water leaks anywhere. Pushed the car to the limits but remained at 90 degrees. I gave a copy of the forum reports but they said the water pump was working perfectly and did not have any faults with pressure. Asked me to monitor and report back. On a plus note new front brakes and anti-roll links fitted. What a difference. No more knock knock over pumps and a small price to pay for silence. I`ll keep you posted over the coming weeks on how things develop. BDM2510 Quote
Buzz Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 I've got the same problem with my '98 alhambra 1.9 tdi 110, on long journeys 70-80 i's fine. Howver, when under load the temperature increases, and then expands out out of the bottle (over the battery) then promptly overheats further due to lack of coolant !. So far I 've replaced the thermostat and water pump - no change. A ford main dealer friend suggests it's probably a partially blocked radiator...I'll let you know Quote
Buzz Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Replaced radiator, refilled (with correct antifrezecheck which colour), now two months down the line - no problems, even 6 up piled high with luggage, roof box and nagging wife, both me and the car kept our cool. Quote
jkspoff Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Sounds identical to my problems, but I have had a new radiator fitted and all coolant replaced. I am still tempted to drain off all the coolant once more and replace. Surely though, if the water pump is working ok then it should push any air lock out ? Quote
