Guest Paul L Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 Has anyone ever tried to replace the bearings in their alternator? Mine is screaming like a banshee when it's cold/wet but eventually dies away as the engine gets warmed up. I've identified the alternator as the problem by a process of elimination. The 'squeal' is constant and with the application of a small amount of WD40 directly onto the front alternator bearing, the noise instantly disappears! I can purchase an AC Delco 'reman' for Quote
johnb80 Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Hi,I've done this many times, go to a transmission specialist such as Fenner for the bearings, shouldn't cost much more than a tenner. While you're out shopping go to an autoelectrical centre and buy a new set of brushes and away you go. I haven't done one on a Galaxy and I'm not sure which make is fitted but they're all pretty much straight forward. Regards - JB Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Bearings are easy to obtain from the likes of Magnum Associates (in Stockport) and similar around the country. Replace front and rear bearings while it's out, and brushes and slip rings as necessary. You may find removing the pulley nut easier on the vehicle. Quote
Guest Paul L Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Thanks for that. Regards Paul Quote
