With that part number, you should have a freewheeling pulley. Looks like we are homing in on the fault. The part number for the pulley is '038 903 119 T. When I get back to work tomorrow I will find out how much it is.

If it's a Mk2 Galaxy with a VW Group diesel with just a simple sprung tensioner, it will have a freewheel pulley. Another way to check is to look if there's a 'lever off' plastic cap in the centre of the pulley.

hi yes sorry its 1996 2.0ltr petrol p reg, just took it to frauds yesterday to have a look and they said it sounds like the fan belt tensioner as the noise is there all the time even at higher revs , at which they quoted

Many many thanks to littledaz for this great info ! It allowed a speedy diagnosis and repair of my perplexing problem.

Pulley failure occurred at 69000 miles on 53 reg TDi

Hi,

I put up with the same irritating vibration and squeaking from the alternator area on my Sharan 1.9tdi 95,000 mles. Replaced the belt and tensioner but this made no difference.

On the motorway one day I got the warning 'alternator workshop' and ignored it for a subsequent 3 months, the result. One evening wife drives the car onto drive making the most god awful noise ever, look under bonnet, release tension on drivebelt and hey presto the pulley fell off! oops off to the VW main agent for repairs, thank god it fell off on the drive. total cost for repair

Just arrived home from a 15 mile journey, experienced 'Alternator Workshop' error on dash along with battery warning light flashing. Warning occurred a couple of times then went out. Tried 'loading' electrics with lights, heated screens, etc.. but could not get error to return. No undue noises (yet). Did notice steering felt 'funny' though. Do you think I've got the above problem starting ?

I'll do the alternator fan check tomorrow. It's only done 22,000 miles, and the three year warranty runs out February '08, so if there is a problem would be best to get fixed soon.

First real problem with car since purchase. Although I've still got a slight hesitation problem at 2000 rpm when accelerating gently - dealer couldn't find a problem ! - maybe it's related to above ??

Hello littledaz. Not sure whether you are still monitoring this thread as the last post was a while ago. Anyway, I took your original explanation of this problem to my local Fraud dealer who eventually agreed with your diagnosis. He said that because my Galaxy 1.9TD (52 plate) is an older model, it is not possible to buy the free-wheeling pulley seperately (he said a later one would be OK) and charged me

Your not going to like this but yes it is.

I used to have a 2002 (52) Galaxy TDI and had mine changed.

I bought it from an independant VW parts supplier in Bristol for i think it was about

Thanks. I classify that is "not so good" news rather than "bad news". If I discover Ford sell it seperately then it will be bad news! I just wanted to be sure the Fraud dealer wasn't deceiving me. Its my own fault - my wife has been complaining about it for a couple of months but I fobbed her off. It wasn't until I drove it myself some distance that I realised she was right! What with Xmas just around the corner and the dealer being within walking distance of my work, I booked it in. In recent months we have acquired a new battery, new fuel tank sender unit, new dashboard (

Hi,

this threads been great!

I can't believe fraud won't sell you a part that wears out after 90k km, but will happily sell you a new alternator at vast expense!!

I have now sourced all the parts from VW for my 02 plate 1.9 TDi Galaxy, and have ordered the tool to lock the pully.

Has anyone got the torque wrench settings for the pulley, and tensioner mounting bolts?

cheers

No idea about the pulley as i had mine changed for me, but when i changed the tensioner im a big believer in the saying "tight is tight" so didnt have the torque settings for it.

I think in some cases you can get away with it, its not like your torquing a cylinder head down.

Ill now get shot down in flames for not doing it by the book but never had any problems over the years.

Just had the same issue with the alternator workshop flash up on dashboard about 2 weeks ago on a 53 plate 1.9 TDi.

Today the power steering was making that horrible noise and feeling rough at low revs.

Had a friend look at it and he new about the pulley problem as he works with Audi's.

Anyway i ordered the pulley from Fords as they were cheaper than VW and Audi for the same part !

The pulley part numbers if that helps anyone are:-

Ford Finis F1469755 and cost was
