phillpv - thanks for the info. and big thanks to littledaz for the guide on checking for this problem

I have just brought a Galaxy, 53 TDi 130 - this is my first post!

I too just had the same issue with the alternator workshop flash up on dashboard about 2 weeks ago on a 53 plate 1.9 TDi !!

I also have a lot of vibration on the tensioner and a squeel with steering on full lock.

"The pulley part numbers if that helps anyone are:- Ford Finis F1469755 / VW/Audi 022 903 119c"

Will this part fit my alternator or should I look for an alternator part number first.

"Had my mate use his own tool and he fitted new pulley approx 20 mins without removing alternator from car."

Will the Laser Tools 3307 mentioned in this tread enable me to change the pulley without removing the alternator - is this the best method?

Thanks in advance for any advice - p.s. can anyone recommend where to get a Workshop Manual

Hi Adam.

Have checked with my mate and that pulley will fit pretty much all the alternators fitted to the Galaxy's.

The Laser tool will not let you change the pulley without removing from vehicle as the shaft is too long and hits the plastic shroud behind the headlight.

Good news for you that the Sealey tool (part number SX 400) boxed set will let you change it while fitted to vehicle.

Found this link for the tool but you will have to add the postage but still a good price for the boxed set.

Hope this helps

Wow! Such a lot of useful info here. I've got all the same noises, vibrations and excess tensioner movement and the alternator pulley's locked solid. Now it did used to freewheel before as I checked some of this out a few months ago when the 'alternator workshop' warning came up briefly. But the car had stood for a couple of weeks then it started to behave again so I forgot all about it until the steering vibration started this week.

So I might be interested in Adam's Sealy tool as I'm not far away, I'll PM you on this.

The alternator p/n is 028 903 030, Littledaz is there any chance you could check out the p/n for the pulley? Car has the ASZ engine.

All sorted now. I got the pulley from German & Swedish, it's not listed on their website but I gave them the VW part No 022 903 119c (from this forum and a VW one) and they found it. OEM part from INA,

Hi,

My wife's 03 Galaxy 1.9TDI has just started making the same sort of noise as described in this thread and despite being a bloke who is supposed to understand cars I've not the faintest clue about things engine related (now if it was a computer I'd be fine!)

I can understand the steps described (to a certain extent) - but could someone *please* post some pictures of what I'm looking for and how to test it (and if life were perfect step by step idiot instructions on how to refit it).

I'd hate to hand over a fortune to Fraud for something that I could do myself with a little bit of photo hand holding...

Please.....

Hi,

Having tried to get a quote for the Alternator Pulley - I got this response

----

Thankyou for your enquiry.

It was not until 17-01-2005 that the Pulley was serviced seperately from

the Alternator unfortunately.

Prior to this build date it was part of the Alternator.

If you require a quotation for the Aletrnator please forward to me the 7

digit VIN/Chassis number and i will quote accordingly.

----

Are they talking rubbish and should I go elsewhere? I was asking for 022 903 119C as mentioned by Littledaz earlier in the thread..

Does anyone know where about the part number is on the alternator? I can't see it while it is in place. How much of the car do I need to take to pieces to check?

Garage told me that Ford said that they couldn't do a pulley for my 'big' alternator - I'd just like to see if they're vaguely right.

Yes, pure rubbish. I got a new pulley for my 99 Tdi from my local motor factor and they lent me the tool

Main dealers etc is definitely not the way to go.

Always the local motor factor and the local garage that they recomment.

I'm about to do littleDaz's test on the alternator to test for sure, but I like to be forwarned!

...and sure enough the alternator is frozen solid!

Looks like the main dealers I spoke to (Fraud and Volkswagoon) are trying to spin me for some cash!!! I'm ordering what I "hope" is the correct part from Euro Car Parts, not bad considering I was crying a little while back ;)

well paid a visit to my local vw dealers, and got a very nice chap t come out and have a listen to the noise, and he reckons its the tensioner and not the alternator pully, because the pulley isnt bouncing but the tensioner is shaking a good en,his words,IT SHOULDNT be doing it as much as it is.

so i bought a new tensioner,

When the "Alternator Workshop" flashed up 4 times in a couple of hours and after reading this topic (1.9TDi 115bhp 2002 Ghia with 104,000 miles) I had the pulley changed here in Spain. Rather expensive Total cost of 103

well i changed my tensioner/belt and pulley yeaterday, after have inital problems on how the spline tool works, sussed it out and worked out which bit went where,

compared to the new 1 the old tensioner was kernackerd, the pulley was siezed a good en and the belt was totally shagged, all cracked and starting to fray.

reckon if i had to do it again i would do it in less then half the ammount of time it did take me,but its all confidence.so all is quite now.

oh and 1 thing i would say is DONT DROP THE BLOODY SPLINE TOOL THROUGH THE ENGINE ONTO THE UNDERTRAY.

like what i did WHATA PRAT:o luckily for some apparent reason about 2 weeks ago i was in lidl and bought an extendable magnet,BOY was that handy, saved me having to take the undertray off.

I am not sure if you can obtain this pulley separately from Ford as my experience is with VW/Audi. What I can tell you is that I priced a pulley for mine at my dealership and it was
