Hi All,

Does anyone know if the on board computer takes into account the fuel burnt by the booster heater (which has been kicking in lately due to the cold weather).

I ask this because I worked out that my car has actually done 40mpg where as the onboard computer thinks its done about 45mpg.

I work it out manually everytimne I fill up and its usually about 2mpg (max) less than the compter says but nows its out by 5mpg.

Just wondered wheter the computer does or doesn't take into account the fuel burnt by the booster heater.

Many thanks

Dal

PS Happy new year to you all

there are numerous posts on TDI MPG http://www.freedomtrailriders.org/forums/style_emoticons/default/toetap05.gifand several discussions on whether or not the fuel burnt by the aux heater is taken into account? as you say it's cold out so no doubt you have the heaters on? the heated screen on? running with full lights on in the dark early mornings? all these thing need to be powered so the engine has to work a little harder and so it's possible this is the cause of you drastic loss of MPG ?

No the MPG system does not take into account the booster heater.....it does not know that it exists....therefore your MPG will be lower than that seen on the readout.

The cars electronics can measure the speed of the vehicle and also the engine fuel consumption, from this it can easily calculate the approx. MPG of the vehicle.

It is not 100% accurate even over long distances.

Also it can be severely affected by the variation by any deflation, wear and modifications of the vehicles tyres.

You seem to be getting very good mpg anyway for winter driving, mine does max 35 around town and upto 48 on long runs, whats your style of driving, town or long journeys ?

Hi Our Sharan does about 55 mpg, in summer got it up to 63 mpg, over the 150k miles we have covered it has averaged 50-55 mpg

Our Galaxy however about 50 mpg tops

some idea of age/model number power output would really be needed to make any comparison
