Noticed the green sight glass on my battery wasnt green anymore <_<

 

Are you sure it didn't just need some charge?

 

70 squid is about right really (IIRC some have got them for 60, but meh,

More efficient to have one big one rather than two small ones in parallel.

Also the batteries will not last very long if you have two running side by side.

 

The diesels perform best with at least 80A and cold cranking of 720Ah, higher spec ones ( or older vehicles ) might be better with 100Ah and 800A cranking.

 

Petrol versions are fine with 60Ah and 640 cranking ( probably get away with a couple of AA's )

I am still laughing at thinking that you got a 3 year warranty from Ford.

 

What the **** do Ford ever supply that lasts 3 years.

 

bargain if you ask me..........just check the small print on the warranty............void if connected to vehicle

the people i know who have two battery's, from what i can gather, the battery's are not connected together in a parallel, or series manner, instead, when one dies, they switch to the other,,, ALSO, they can use one battery to power auxiliary things, (like high powered search light), while using the other battery to run the car!

 

the only adjoining bit, is the charging part, and even that has some control unit attached!

IIRC our old (upto J reg) transits at a former employers had 2 batteries, one was used purely for starting and the other ran everything else. The charging was somehow prioritised so that the starter battery was always full.

 

Im sure it was a factory option, our service vans used to spend a lot of time in the middle of forests etc, well away from civilisation, a flat battery was a nightmare in the days before mobile phones.

I can see the point of the old back up battery idea.

 

Would be handy if you could have that with some sort of electronic changeover thingy.

 

Mind you I would still like to find the largest capacity battery that would fit in the Galaxy battery bay !

 

Anyone got the dimensions for this ?

mmm, no dimensions yet, all i know, is there is room for a slightly wider, and taller battery, but no room for any more depth.

The additional battery under driver/passenger seat is an optional extra used to power the "auxilliary heater with programmable timer" - i.e the option where auxilliary heater starts independently of the engine to warm the car before you start it on those frosty mornings in Finland. It is connected to the alternator via an additional charge relay - AFAIK it cannot power anything else, it is purely a small battery to make sure that the main battery is not discharged by the heater operating in this mode.

 

Modern good quality batteries can last a long time - typically 5 or more years provided it was stored correctly to start with and is kept fully charged at all times. The early failures on original batteries is usually down to the fact that vehicles are kept in storage a long time and worse still in a showroom, with the doors opening and the courtesy lights left on etc.

 

Things that kill batteries:-

 

Excessively high temperatures

 

Vibration and shock

 

Deep discharge

 

Prolonged period of partial or more discharge - you can get this with frequent stop/start type patterns.

 

If you have a "trickle" or "standby charge" capable charger, using this 4 or more times a year for 24 hours or more can prolong the life of your battery by "topping up" the battery fully.

crikey that`ll teach me to wait until i read my replies :P

new battery is fine sweet as a nut

auxillary water pump (the one that comes on when you stop) has packed in there is no noise when i turn the engine off :P

and the parking sensors have defaulted to screeching/ flashing problem mode

still it will give me something to do when the rain stops

when using two batteries on one car and they are not directly connected they use a split charge relay

this joins the two together and are only open(relay) when the alternator is running but not under load(i.e the front battery is not discharged )

this system is used in all emergency service vehicles
