I have a Galaxy 1.9 Tdi 130 2003 model which has a very annoying 'tommy gun' type rattle coming from the fan belt tensioner. This goes off when you slightly increase the revs. It is worse when you put more pressure on the belt through the alternator (lights) or turning the A/C on. It is at its worst when turning the power steering while stood still, making the power steering very noisy like it needs lubricating. Again, this is not a problem if you add a couple of hundred revs. I have changed the tensioner which made no difference and replaced the fan belt with a genuine Ford one. The latter worked for a week, but now it is back to what it was. Have taken to 2 independent garages who have both said their is definately something wrong, but don't know what. Thinking of replacing the fan belt again for a non Ford one to see if this works. Anybody out there with any ideas?

Some time ago I had the same problem on a MK1 1.9 and to cure it I had to change the casting and spring pressure arm for the tenisioner.

I have not had the problem on the MK11 however it may be the same part causing the issue, it eventually wears the tensioner shaft out through the casting.

Have a check and see if lubricating the shaft of the tensioner and not the spindle for the pulley quietens the noise if so that where the problem is.

PS look at that Post number 700 it was at the time I am impressed

Now going to change the fan belt next week for a non genuine Ford one and hope that the Ford one is faulty. At least then I can eliminate the Fan Belt as the cause before I take it to Ford and get ripped off while they try and find the fault!

Hi Snickers

My 52 reg 115ps had a similar problem, (exactly the same symptoms).

The tensioner was visibly rattling around under load- mainly when steering pump was under load.

Fortunately fixed under warranty) fraud changed the tensioner and belt, seemed better for a few days.

I took it back, then they changed alternator, apparently the alternator bearings had failed.- remember the drive belt drives aircon, alternator and steering pump.

Problem sorted.

So I suggest you have a swing in the alternator pulley to see if there is any movement.

Good luck.

My 02 plate TDi 115 just started doing exactly the same thing yesterday. The steering sounds very loud and feels "rumbly" when turning it when the car is standing still and the engine is idling. If you increase the revs slightly then all the symptoms disappear. Even when not steering you can hear a rattly noise from under the bonnet. Again, this disappears as soon as you increase the revs slightly. I can see something next to the drivebelt which is wobbling (I assume this is the tensioner everyone is talking about). Also, at the exact time this problem started I got two warning messages on the dash saying "Alternator Workshop". That warning hasn't appeared again but judging from what you fellas are saying it could indeed be the alternator bearings. Having said that I am a real dumbass when it comes to car maintenance.

Ah - seems a 'grate way to put off new members.

I understand why new members have to go through a filter - but it seems, in my opinion, to be too fine.
