I'm considering buying a 2002 2.3 Zetec from a colleague and am wondering if that engine has the cam chain or cambelt.

Also, I noticed there was no lower engine cover fitted - is this common or has some spotty kid in the garage forgotten to refit it after a service?

I have a '97 Aspen 7-seater at the moment which hasn't missed a beat in 8 years so I'm not worried either way just interested

Yes the 2.3 should have a undertray. Perhaps the owner has flogged it on E-bay to raise funds for Christmas?

:D :D :D :16:

Is it not a safety concern if its missing?

I thought I read somewhere that you could suffer sudden loss of power steering if the undertray is missing

by water spray getting on to the belt and so losing traction on the power steering pump pulley IIRC

Just found an interesting sevice bulletin.

This one states that the spray problem affects 2.0 and 2.8 petrols aswell as the TDi's. But says this does not apply to 2.3's! Does this mean the 2.3 has no undertray?

Can a 2.3 owner confirm if this is the case?

from that file it would seem that no undertray is on the 2.3

Yes, our 2.3 has an undertray and as it's derived from the 2.0 DOHC I can't really see why it should differ, unless it has a very different auxilliary drive belt arrangement.

Just curious, where abouts is your power steering pump? The bulletin covers an issue with spray entering through the towing eye cover and affecting the belt. perhaps this pump was relocated on the 2.3.

If that were the case the interpretation of the bulletin could be that this issue does not affect the 2.3 rather than there is no tray.

my 2.3 which is a mk 1 also has an undertray

Well I've had a squint in there Tiny and it's so tightly packed in I'm none the wiser. Looking at where the pipes seem to go I would guess it's low down at rear of the engine. I also notice that compared to the MK1 the towing eye is now very well covered with the lower grill section forming a cover over the top of it, and needs to be removed to tow.

Yes, there is an undertray on mine.

The PS pump is sited almost directly above the aircon compressor, and is driven by the poly-vee serpentine belt.

I would say that it's a good idea to have an undertray!

My 2.3 has an under tray

Ditto.

As I discoverd when I had to remove it after droping a spark plug down there.

I can now also see why it is so often left off by garages, you need arms 6 ft long if you are refitting it on ya own ;) ;)

My 2.3 also has the undertray fitted... but you can't actually remove it from under the car unless it's jacked/on stands/on a ramp... drives me bonkers.

I seem to be able to reach the nuts at the back okay, but then again I do have trouble with my knuckles dragging on the floor...
