geane Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Starts 1st time in the morning but once warmed up car stalls and refuses to restart for approx 10-15 minutes(time getting longer and longer,it was 5-10 minutes)It is very embarrassing especially when I go to fill up in petrol stations. It will not let me restart after a quick"pit stop" at any local errand. Please HELP me.I have just ordered a new Water Temperature Sensor as someone thinks that it could be the problem. Some one else said it could be "Intermittent Feed to the Fuel-Valve", making it stall.Could it be by any chance?? Thanks In Advance. Quote
jvernon Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Firstly, I recommend you put your vehicle details in your signature for any future problems you have that require the specifcation of your car. NikpV has posted details of how to do it in this post: http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...indpost&p=64516 Does the length of time it takes before it allows you to restart it relate to the temperature of the engine when it stalls? Or does the car always stall at the same temp.? A faulty coolant temperature sensor can cause all sorts of problems with sensor orientated engines such as the ones fitted to our vehicles so they're probably right in thinking that this is causing your problem. To the rest of the forum: Is there such thing as a 'Fuel Valve'? Or is it usually called something else? Regards,James Quote
Guest wolfie Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 To the rest of the forum: Is there such thing as a 'Fuel Valve'? Or is it usually called something else? Regards,James there is a fuel cut off valve on the TDI (R-Reg 1.9TDi) which the OP has, maybe this is what he's refering to? Quote
geane Posted December 8, 2006 Author Report Posted December 8, 2006 Sorry Its 1.9 TDi-R-Reg and like wolfie said its the fuel cut off valve thats come on the computer as the problem.Could this be right? Is it worth going down this road? Fitted the Water Temp sensor but still NO Luck!!!!!!! Is this "fuel cut off valve" a separate part or part of another part?could this be causing the problem? It only does this, once i have had a 20-30 minute run in it.starts first time from cold.It WILL NOT start Until the glow plug sign comes on in the dash board and that usually disappears for the 10-15 minute while i am sitting waiting in the car,if that makes any sense. Why does the glow plug sign totally disappear(even though the car does not need the G-plug once its warmed up)BUT soon as the G-plug reappears in the dashboard the car will restart straight away!!! Is It worth changing the Glow Plugs? Quote

Is It worth changing the Glow Plugs? glow plugs should come on briefly however warm certainly does on our mk2, if it starts from cold its not the glowplugs - look elsewhere what would bother me is that the lack of the glowplug light may indicate that the startup sequence is not being instigated correctly so resulting in lack of fuelling and so not starting....... Quote
jvernon Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Ahh I should have thought of that. I agree with NikpV...the fact that the glowplug light does not come on at during warm starts probably does indicate something is wrong with the starting sequence. The question is what? Am I correct in thinking that you've already had it plugged into diagnostic software its the fuel cut off valve thats come on the computer as the problem.Could this be right? Is it worth going down this road? as this part of your last reply confused me a little...i'm not having a good day today lol. If not I'd recommend it...hopefully the ECU will have logged a fault code relating to your problem which will point you in the right direction? Where abouts are you based? I'm sure if there's someone near you on the forum with the right software and/or equipment they'd be willing to help :) James Quote
big_kev Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 Problems with the fuel cut-off valve would indicate a faulty ignition relay. Relay 109 probably black might be grey, see if the relay is getting hot. If the car doesn't fire try giving the relay a tap whilst turning the engine over. Ignore any reference to glow plugs these are not a problem. Quote
jvernon Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 Ignore any reference to glow plugs these are not a problem.Just to clarify, in case the above quote was referring to my reply or in case somebody else get's the wrong end of the stick, I wasn't saying that the fact that the glowplug light is not illuminating for a short period during warm starts (as it should from what I can gather from the forum as I've never had a diesel galaxy) means that the glowplugs are preventing it from firing up; I merely thought perhaps this could indicate something else used in the starting sequence not doing it's job properly? I don't know if that's correct though; just something to think about. geane Posted December 10, 2006 Author Report Posted December 10, 2006 So do I get the "Fuel Cut Off Valve" changed? or the Relay thing? Its driving me nuts. The thing about the glow plug not reappearing when warm and hence startup sequence is not being instigated correctly does make sence to me. The thing is that I have to "Sit and Wait" in the car for the glow-plug sign to reappear and ONLY then Will it Restart! WHY? How do I fing the Relay to give it a Tap???? Quote

geane Posted December 12, 2006 Author Report Posted December 12, 2006 Changed Relay109 Today. Here I go to work Today will report back if it has done the trick............................................ Which other Relays could I change which might be related to this problem?? Quote
geane Posted December 14, 2006 Author Report Posted December 14, 2006 Thankyou Very much Everyone.A Faulty Relay109 was the problem, put a new one in and its done the trick!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been having this problem over the last 3 months On and off and it has caused be sooo much trouble but thanks to this great forum no more. A HUGE THANKYOU. Quote

big_kev Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 Glad you got it sorted Geane Relay 109 really b*gg*rs up you electronics when it goes faulty. I wish I knew who the joker at VW was that decided to use the Glow Plug lamp to warn of ECU problems. What was wrong with using a seperate lamp ? A footnote Has anyone actually had a faulty ECU ?Please do not include example where Fraud has swapped your ECU and charged you an arm and a leg saying it was faulty, I mean real examples where you have plugged an ECU in and it doesn't work then plugged a different one in and it does ! I though these were rock solid. Rant for the day ( actually my second one dont mention the T word ) Quote
