NikpV Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 Is it too stupid to ask but - is the pump pulley going round  Quote
Guest Gerry Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 Not a stupid question but I will have to make sure in the morning (lack of light - Dropped my inspection lamp) if it has gone does anyone know where I could get one? Ford are expensive and just sold me the whole part for the pulley when I actually only needed the pulley. As I am a complete novice can you tell me which pulley it is and how easy is it to replace ? Quote
Guest Gerry Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 Thanks for the swift reply and yes it is turning. I am struggling as to what to do next. The reservoir level is ok the pulley is turning. Anyone any ideas ????? It is greatly appreciated. Quote
NikpV Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 why did you change the tensioner and belt - was there any problem before? Quote
Guest Gerry Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 The plastic part of the tensioner pulley had worn through and was loose and not tensioning the belt. The belt was replaced just because I changed the tensioner and I though while I was there i may as well. Quote
Guest rambo Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 how about bleeding the power steering by taking the steering fluid cap off and turning lock to lock 5 times ??? just a shot in the dark :16: hope it helps :D Quote
Guest Gerry Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 Will give it a shot tommorrow and let you know how it goes, thanks Quote
Guest wolfie Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 silly question but you have routed the drive belt correctly? as changing the tensioner pully mech you should not have disturbed the PS pump? the belt goes under the PS pump pully! if you've routed the belt over it? the tensioner will be pushing it away from and off the PS pully! Quote
richaber Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 silly question but you have routed the drive belt correctly? as changing the tensioner pully mech you should not have disturbed the PS pump? the belt goes under the PS pump pully! if you've routed the belt over it? the tensioner will be pushing it away from and off the PS pully! Is it possible to inadvertantly route the belt incorrectly so it is the wrong side of the pully and turning it the wrong way??? Quote
jvernon Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 I would imagine it is possible to route the belt incorrectly...but i'd think this would cause at least one other thing driven by the auxilliary drive belt to also to be noticeably malfunctioning? The only thing to do is check the routing of the belt when possible and then go from here. I bet a new power steering pump is quite expensive :23: unless of course you can get one from a dismantlers to test and 90% positively eliminate (there's always a chance that the pump off the scrapped could be broken as well :) ? Guest Gerry Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Many thanks to all who replied the correct answer in fact that it is possible to route the belt incorrectly. I have just proved it.......... Anyway for the life of me I could not get the new belt to fit so I went back to the old one and still couldn't get it to fit. Then all of a sudden after finishing at midnight last night and another 4 hours tonight it ust slipped on. I did have it routed incorrectly at first and then couldnt get it to fit following the correct route and then it just slipped on - I believe that as I was working on my own and couldn't check the top at the same time as the bottom it was catching on alip of one of the top pulley's. Problem is now solved and many thanks to those who tried to assit----------------I am a nugget. PS the only thing not workig was the power steering, air con alternator etc were all ok. Quote
jvernon Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Glad to hear you solved the problem. How strange...I'd have placed money on something else not working! Good job I didn't though eh :) Regards,James Quote
Guest wolfie Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 with the belt routed the wrong side of the PS pump pully every thing else still rotates in the correct direction, the PS pump is the the only item that gets reversed! never tried running the PS pump in reverse! it's only a simple vane type pump, not sure if it would work correctly in reverse though? Quote
Guest Gerry Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 From personal experience the power steering pump does not work in reverse. Quote

Yes I see what you mean. I'm having a bad today today - or yesterday now I suppose :) James Quote
