Ok,

a month or 2 back, the engine, would rev up to 1000RPM, by itself, and our temp needle, was erratic.

we got the engine temp sensor changed, which sorted both problems - for a while.

but today, the engine, went back to its old routine, of slowly revving up to 1000 rpm, when it should be idle.

doesn't do it all the time, just occasionally.

Any thoughts?

MJR :)

A couple of things here Matt

One have any of your bulbs stopped working on the lighting side ?

Is you aerial still connected above the rear window ?

Have you checked the fuses to see if any have blown ?

It is quite likely that the cause of the raising tick over is that there is a residual voltage on the earth side of the vehicle, could be many causes and as we have had a lot of rain have you checked the footwells for flooding too ?

also might be worth cleaning out idle speed control valve, not sure where or if the galaxy has them

but if it does a quick clean with wd40 should help

worked on older fords we had

I'd put money on the temp sender - mine is doing it too, been doing so for ages. Finally ordered new sender, 'o' ring and clip from Fords -will fit at the w/e. I'll let you know how I get on - have put a post on here to ask if anyone has done the job but no answers!

mmm an ISV on a TDI? are they not drive by wire? hence the idle speed and cruise control being controlled by the PCM!

ok, thanks for the replies

the temp needle, is working perfect.

...i did a full bulb check just the other day, and all was ok, but i will check again, as soon as iv had me tea.

i havnt checked the fuses yet, but i dont really know which fuses i should be checking - i will have to wait till the weekend before i can do that. as im going back chester in the corsa (and its dark now).

Is you aerial still connected above the rear window ?

..the radio still works fine, so i would expect it to be ok, but i will check anyway.

...i was thinking, could the accelerator pedal be on the way out? - as the engine temp sensor was replaced just a few weeks ago - OR could this sensor be on the way out - AGAIN?

it could be possible the scuttle drains are blocked - as it does get parked under trees (acorn trees  )

but, have not noticed any water, where it shouldn't be - again, i will check.

Thanks all

ok.. been and tried everything electric (apart from fag lighters).

ALL internal lights work fine

ALL external lights work fine - APART from the front left side light, i give it a whack, and it started working again

Both Heated screens, heat up

Radio works - and the aerial appears connected (at the rear window)

ALL heat blowers and settings work (including AC)

Using both wipers didnt make it rev up either.

electric windows work fine

(think thats it  )

then, after i switch everything off,,, after a few seconds, it did it again!!! revved up to 1000rpm.

i switched it off, and started it up again, and it was idling fine??? :16:

TMAP sensor - (intake air temp and pressure sensor) If air temp signal is wrong, ie is sensing excessively cold, it will up the idle speed.

Alternator charge control - If your battery is on its way out, engine speed will be increased so as to increase output from the alternator. Same applies if heated screens, headlights, fans etc are all switched on.

Power steering - Not sure if all Galaxies have them (2.0/2.3 do), but many cars have a pressure switch on the steering rack/PAS pump that senses when extra load is required from the engine as you turn the steering wheel, upping the idle speed. If this switch is short circuited, it might be responsible.

Clutch switch - This switch when closed senses that you are about to put into / change gear, and on some cars increases the idle speed to reduce risk of stalling and to give a smoother gear change.

Vehicle speed sensor - If it sees a wrong signal, it might hold engine speed higher for a number of reasons.

from here

these two sound like possible causes

TMAP sensor - (intake air temp and pressure sensor) If air temp signal is wrong, ie is sensing excessively cold, it will up the idle speed.

where is the TMAP sensor - and how much to replace?

Alternator charge control - If your battery is on its way out, engine speed will be increased so as to increase output from the alternator. Same applies if heated screens, headlights, fans etc are all switched on

the battery could be knacked.

it has not been replaced while we have had it, and their is no paper work to say it has ever been changed.

aslo, my battery tester, says its reading 25%, in the morning, before starting.

however, once youve driven it to the battery shop, my tester reads 75 to 100%, and so does the blokes tester.

also, when you have dipped beam on, and use an electric window, theres a noticeable dip in the brightness of the lights.
