LOZ Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 If this smoke is coming from the rear passenger side just underneath the door. It sounds like the same problem, I had which turned out to be the rear heater motor. If you ignore it, it does get worse, its especially worse when the engine is cold. As soon as it gets to temperature the smoke clears up. Also if the smoking starts and you're in stationary traffic it looks as if the cars on fire! Get the drivers behind to back off though!!! Make sure the plonkers (sorry Ford) get you the correct part ordered so as not to waste yet another full day without the car!!! :) Quote
Guest tweedy Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 I,m glad there is someone else sitting in a cloud of smoke at the traffic lights wondering if the car is on fire.... mine is doing exactly the same. I have been quite concerned. But have a big dislike to just going to main dealers and getting shafted with the bill. Please let me know if you get a price for having it fixed. I have a boss that watches the car expenses like a hawk. So it would be nice to tell him first. regards tweedy. scotland. Quote
LOZ Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Sent you an e-mail Tweedy. All Ford could tell me was it's not doing any harm? But it will need to be looked at cos no doubt the long hand of the law will pull you! Quote
Guest miketaylor_32 Posted November 22, 2003 Report Posted November 22, 2003 I also have this annoying problem with white smoke appearing from underneath of my galaxy, this is know the second 1.9tdi I have purchased and both have suffered with this problem, I have found that the problem only occurs when the ambient temperature is cold, I believe the rear heater is driven / operated from the diesel, the smoke appaers from a small breather pipe at the rear of the galaxy on the passenger side, I also found that through the summer months this fault does not appear, also it sounds like a jet engine landingafter I turn the engine off, I assume that this problem is the norm but if anyone outthere has any more info to offer then please do. Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 22, 2003 Report Posted November 22, 2003 The "problem":Auxiliary heater to warm the cabin and coolant when ambient temperature is low. There is a degree (no pun intended) of tolerance on when it cuts in, but depends on the external air temperature and the engine coolant temperature. When the weather is warm, the heater does not cut in, even if the coolant is cold, hence no smoke problems in summer. When the heater should run, what happens (with mine, at any rate) is that there is a whisp of white smoke just after the engine starts, which is the aux heater starting up. There should be no smoke after it has caught (just a second or two) but I think that the heater has 2 or 3 goes to get running if it doesn't fire up first time. The heater switches itself off when the coolant gets hot but on short runs, as has been said, you hear the jet engine immitation when you stop and get out of the car. This is nothing to worry about. What is worrying is if you are getting white smoke as you are driving. I suspect that this means that excessive fuel is being burnt but quite how this can be sorted without consulting a garage I do not know. I haven't looked but the TIS CD may offer suggestions. (See ebay for TIS CD - also you could search this site for more on the aux heater). Quote
Guest mick Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 Living / working near a large mil. airstrip, the number of times I look for the aircraft overhead when getting out of the Gal in the cold!! The heater seems to do the job though, as the rear vents always operate earlier than front. Quote
Taliska Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Blimey, I heard it this morning - and from reading this topic last night - I know what it is! Wow - it does sound like an aircraft jet engine - took me by surprise too. I thought I'd heard some wheezing before now, but with the cold weather this morning combined with a short trip - I heard this almightly roaring noise when I got out. I must say that I was really surprised too how quickly the car heated up - normally diesels take ages to warm up, but with the temperature on full volume, it was really quick. So, does this auxiliary heater thing burn fuel directly to warm the car? - looks like a small exhaust pipe under there. Wierd, but does seem to work! Taliska Quote
Guest E11esar Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 Hi there. I too have this problem and I have been told by the Ford Dealership this is a known issue with more and more occurences being reported. They have advised that all I need is to have a ceramic plug replaced within the rear heater unit and that will solve the problem. The car is still under warranty so this will be covered by that. At first they advised I would need to have the diesel tanik drained and then the plug replaced at a cots in the region of Quote
