Guest rabubba Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 In a nut shell.... Had 02 Galaxy 1.9 TDi since July.Started smoking once weather got cooler eg when stationary, on stopping etc so I'm guessing we bought it with the problem. Read all about booster heater on here, got myself an uprated glow plug and had our usual garage (not Ford) fit it last week. They said old glow plug was ok (but only .228 one) but fitted new one (.340) anyway as that was what we'd asked them to do, which is fair enough. They said though, that they didn't think that it was working properly and that we needed a complete new booster heater (as we wouldn't be able to get the part that wasn't working, on it's own) and we would need to get it from Ford. They said that it is programmed to cut out after a certain number of attempts, and that is what it was doing. It is still smoking, although I would say not quite as bad today (Mon, changed last Thurs). You can still hear the jet engine sound when we stop and also the ticking whilst we are going along (so does that mean it is working?) although not generally later in the day. My car use in the week is almost all short runs (I'm a childminder) of probably 5-10 minutes 5x a day - I guess this doesn't help! We almost always "smoke" in the morning, but not always later in the day.Do I need to take it to Ford? If so any ideas at how much a new Booster Heater is going to set me back? Or should I give it a bit longer to see if the smoke dies down? How much, if any, smoke is normal? Thanks! Quote
mumof4 Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 jet engine noise and smoke means it is working....... it engages (as it were)..when the temp is 10 degrees or under.. what colour is the smoke?..nice billowing white is normal i believe.. welcome to the forum. ;) Quote
Dalbir Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 Mine did extactlt that when I replaced it with a 340 a few weeks back. Smoked like hell for the 1st 3 or 4 days with the ticking noises etc. Now kicks in (with the ticking noise) and runs without the excess smoke. It had run in over a year at least. Yours too should settle down after a few days. Ticking sound and wam exhaust pipe (on the booster) is a good sign of it working ok. Quote
