Genepaul Posted November 26, 2006 Author Report Posted November 26, 2006 Ok, tried both ends which were firmly attached, tried both with the aerial lead plug in the back and without, no difference at all, which i thought there would be. Is it usual for the radios to pack up? Kev Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 your problem might be the in line booster on the Aerial rumour has it the booster is in the roof lining near the back of the car. if its knackard it might be reducing any reception to your radio. MJR Quote
Genepaul Posted November 26, 2006 Author Report Posted November 26, 2006 Does anyone know how to check this? is the booster powered by the head unit? if so i won't be able to try another unit as it won't power the booster. Would plugging in another car aerial work? Kev Quote

Kev Hi Kev I had a similar problem a little while ago - My radio kept losing the station and would start searching - I tried all the cables etc and in the end I bought a new radio of E bay and that cured the problem. Scorpiorefugee Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 You really do not have to buy a new aerial to test your radio. It's only a piece of telescopic tubing pretending to be a piece of wire and it's not tuned in any way so a long piece of wire will work. Reception will not be brilliant but you should be able to find a local station. All you need is a couple of yards of flex, strip half an inch off the end and fold it back on itself and shove it in the hole. Don't shove too much into the hole or you may short something out, but you would have to really try hard to manage that. Just lay the wire across the top of the dash or hang it out of the window and, if the radio is working, you should get something. Quote

Money saved in the nick of time, will now go home and wreck a coat hanger, long time since i've seen one of those on a car wing. Kev Quote

Genepaul Posted November 27, 2006 Author Report Posted November 27, 2006 That's it, tried the coathanger and the wire and heard HIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, so the radio must be dead  Of to find a unit to replace dead one. Thanks for the help. Kev Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 loads of units on ebay good luck m8  Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 I hope that you are getting somewhere with this but, just to clarify, I said nothing about a coathanger and I am not sure if you are joking. Simply, all you have to do is shove the stripped end of the wire into the centre hole of the aerial socket on the radio unit. I do it all the time as I use car radios as low voltage units in wet areas and other places where it is necessary to have low voltage units. All I do is just what I have described with a bit of refinement and, unless the building is heavily screened, the radio works just fine. Mind, It is likely that your rf unit has been wiped out by a nearby lightning strike or something, but it's always worth making sure. Just noticed where you are. I have an old 5000 lifted from an old Scorpio and it was working last time I tried it. You can certainly borrow it for a test if you like. I'm near Kidderminster. Quote
big_kev Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 The comment about the coat hanger was serious. Is there anyone over 40 who hasn't fitted one of these ? You can actually buy these as diecast models, Rover P6 shown below. http://toybox100.bizland.com/vanguard.htm Quote

Genepaul Posted November 29, 2006 Author Report Posted November 29, 2006 Cheers for the offer Scorp, I have a unit winging its way to me as we speak, very kind member of the group offered his redundant 5000. Almost bought one of ebay but realised at the last minute that there are different versions of the 5000, i think all models except the Galaxy have more rounded corners, the galaxy model has very square corners. Might use the old one in the garage along with the autochanger, have an Ipod fitting kit on order from Dension. Cheers all for the help. Kev Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 very true about the edges sold our old focus unit a while back to a galaxy owner but it did not fit,for that reason  Quote
Genepaul Posted November 30, 2006 Author Report Posted November 30, 2006 Conclusion! New unit fitted, Kerrang out of the speakers :D Another different part fitted to the Galaxy since it was purchased, good job this forum is here, would need very deep pockets if it had to go to the garage each time  Thanks Kev Quote
