Hi my Galaxy has lost 1st and 2nd gears last night. Looking in FAQ's it sounds like a cable has come off can someone point me in the right direction to look for this.

Cheers seemed to have fixed it for now :lol: but didnt find out what was wrong pulled it all apart :rolleyes: cables were conected and it was ok :angry2:

 

Guess what yeah it failed again just as i went to go up a vsteep narrow hill. Clutch didnt like it LOL had a feel around in the dark but had no joy. Which is the best area to be looking gearbox end or gear stick end of the cable?

There are two areas of concern onth MK1 gearbox as fitted to the TDi.

 

 

 

First as already indicated the gearbox selector cables often ease themsleves out of the bracket meant to retain them during shifting from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th if this is heppening on a regular basis then a look from the front of the car into the righthand side of the engine bay at the back of the engine should show you where the brackets and cables are located. All the bracketry is mounted on the rear of the engine at the point where the gearbox mounts onto the engine.

 

However a repeated loss of shifting can be due to a failed bolt on the selector shaft in the gearbox itself, this can be removed without removing the gearbox but it is fiddly and the result would be a broken bolt in the bottom of the gearbox. (its a 7mm metric fine thread bolt as used in a 405 deisel pump pulley). If this is the case the cables will still be in their respective brackets and the selector will move on the outside of the gearbox but the shaft in the gearbox will not move in the required plane of operation.

Have a look at the gearbox end. If the cable outer jumps out of it's mounting bracket, it can creep back in over time, letting you think the problem is fixed.

 

Id the cable comes out easily, either replace the bracket, or get some cable ties.

 

Cheers It appears to be the cable end, yesterday it had come off alltogether from what ive picked its time to replace the cable and its a 4hr job at frauds brilliant :ph34r: sound like an easy job NOT. It can stay off the road now until Saturday
