Taliska Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 Hi all, Got a new 1.9 TDI 115 early October - computer says it wants a service @ 2800 miles. Okay, so it's an import and it could have been sitting around a bit waiting to be sold... Do I believe it - do I wait for 10k (need to check interval in the book)? Do I knacker the warranty if I ignore it until later? Thoughts please? Thanks, Taliska Quote
chromedome Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 You say you bought the car new. I suggest contacting your dealer for info. It could be the TDI needs a first service (probably just an oil change) at 5000. Quote
iainkirk Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 The service indicator comes up very early (3000 miles) on new ones. Mine did the same thing. The handbook tells you how to reset it (for that reason). Press and hold the tripmeter reset on the rev counter and turn the ignition key on I think. Remember only 5-6 years ago when Fords had a 1000 mile first service in the book, so they could check they'd assembled the car properly??? Ford service interval for them is 10,000 miles. That's what the warranty requires. (Mine's Oct 53 reg and has already had 10,000 mile service!!!!!!!) Do check your oil level though - you WILL use the best part of a litre or more before you get to 10,000 miles! Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 The first service is due around 9000 miles according to the Trip Computer, and it should start to warn you about 1800 miles before. The 3 vehicles we have (Sharan/Alahambra and Galaxy) all did this +/- 1000 miles. There is no early service, and the vehicle is not a Ford anyway. (And quite how Iain believes the Ford goes better than the others with identical powertrains is beyond me). It bases the warning on several factors, including time and mileage travelled, idling periods and overall driving style, plus the number of stop/starts and journey lengths. VW fill the engine of new TDIs with VW506.01 oil, which is able to do up to 30000 miles before change, in theory. However, it looks as if your vehicle has either had the ECU tampered with (unlikely) or it has been stood for ages somewhere. In that case, you should have the oil and filter changed, since the oil may have deteriorated to a point that it is less than effective. The dealer will reset the service indicator, and you can then do another 9000 miles before the warning will be active again. I would be tempted to get the vehicle back on track by having the oil done now, and then again at 10000 miles, which should get the intervals sorted. Quote
iainkirk Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 "(And quite how Iain believes the Ford goes better than the others with identical powertrains is beyond me)." Where did I say that SA ???? "There is no early service, and the vehicle is not a Ford anyway." I didn't say anything to contradict those things in the thread above. I was simply relating to the way Ford used to have 1000 mile services in their service schedule. Quote
rwtomkins Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 for what it's worth, mine's a 1.9TDI, and it was an import, and it said "service now" at about 2,800 miles even though it was only about eight months old at the time. (yes, i know, i only do a low mileage.) i just ignored it and i'm about to book it in for its first annual service right now. i wouldn't worry about it, Taliska - my suggestion is just wait till it reaches 10,000 miles or its first birthday, whichever is the sooner. just like the handbook says. Guest SA Intruder Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 Iain, "So why does the Galaxy look and go better than the VW and SeatVW versions? Why does it sell better in Europe as well as UK then? Because it IS better " August 30th Quote
iainkirk Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Yup, looks like I did say that SA! Glad to see you agree with me now then!! For "go better", i could have been referring to the cosmetic appeal :) /me removes tongue from cheek. Quote
XN85 Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 I've also got a Galaxy import, an 03 TDi. I bought it at 3-months old with just under 3000 miles on the clock. A couple of weeks later I took it into my local dealer because the 'service' light was flashing. I don't know what they did but it just shows the word SERVICE (no mileage) in the display and they said come back at 10000... I'll probably still do an interim oil and filter change (I was brought up with Cortinas and 6000-mile service intervals!). As for the Galaxy being faster and better... it must be the aerodynamic blue oval on the front! :) Quote
