listening to his radio show today and up crops a discussion on a spate of thefts from cars from 1 area,car stereos and it turned out to be fords(focus)but any ford with the 5000 seris basically there a myth going round that in these radios there is a chip that once you wire it to your phone cable you can watch sky television free,he had a couple of so called experts on saying that it isnt true etc etc,but then he had alot of calls saying it is in fact true and some bloke started telling him how to do it :rolleyes: but the bugger stopped him and cut him off,another chap phoned in and said in his village 8 cars(so it appears its not isolated then) had been broken into and they were all fords and that the windsreen repairers have been inundated with calls.SO WATCH OUT.

 

and if any one knows if its true share it with the world :lol:

Yes heard the show myself. The Sky scam was something to do with cutting the wires i think.

Thought the idea of sharing the multi room package with a neighbour was a good idea.

The hot spot for these thefts was Cardiff...which is another good reason to stay on this side of the Severn Bridge. :rolleyes: :lol: Andy.

A massive surge in car crime in Cardiff has been blamed on a bizarre urban myth.

 

More than 200 vehicles were broken into in just three nights in the city - nearly four times as many as on an average weekend.

 

And police believe the vehicles - 95 per cent of which were Ford cars - were targeted because thieves had heard a rumour that the radios contained a chip that could pick up free satellite television.

 

The urban myth has surfaced before in other parts of the UK.

 

In May, Warwickshire police had to issue a warning claiming the rumour might have originated from America where some manufacturers fit radios that are capable of tuning in a radio network called Sky.

But police and Ford have completely dismissed the idea that a microchip in UK car stereos can be put on a satellite receiver or digibox to receive free Sky television.

 

 

Chief Superintendent Bob Evans said: 'It works out that we had almost four times the recorded rate of car crime.

 

 

'We have spoken to all parties concerned, including Ford and the satellite providers, and can only conclude that this is nothing more than an urban myth and the microchip cannot be used in this way.'

 

 

Paul Wilson, from Ford, said: 'There is nothing in the radios that is compatible with a digibox so these people are wasting their time.

 

 

'Unfortunately customers tend to forget that there is a control panel with the radios that the owners should remove from their car and take with them.'

 

 

One victim Bob Bull, of Burwell Close, Pontprennau, Cardiff, woke to find the radio had been ripped out of his Ford Focus mobility car on Sunday morning.

Apparently this Urban Myth has been caused by something that is actually available in the states.

 

Just as in the UK, American satellites carry radio stations in addition to TV stations. A company has launched a new radio which FORD is fitting to several of its cars in the US to enable people to receive RADIO from SATELLITE.

Some plonker had interpreted this as being....

 

steal a car radio from a British Ford and there is a chip in there that will let you watch SKY TV for nothing.

 

.... sadly as this myth spreads there will be thousands of cars suffering damage and loss because of people too thick to understand that it is impossible. SKY DIGITAL HAS NEVER BEEN CRACKED despite people trying for many years.

 

The guy who was talking about cutting wires and the reference to a 9 volt battery are also myths about getting SKY pay Per View events for nothing. All they do is prevent the box from contacting SKY with information about the event you have ordered. Because the box doesnt successfully "phone home" it stores the info in the digibox for when it can succeed in phonng home. If the amount of stored transactions reaches a preset limit then the box will refuse any more PPV or Box Office events until it downloads it info. Once it phones home you then get billed for all the stuff you ordered irrespective of how long ago it was. I suppose if you NEVER reconnect a phone line then you have "Got SKY for FREE" but you will only get a limited amount.
