Guest SimonG Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 I have a 97 VR6 4x4 Galaxy which is making an awful sound of humming and a bit of vibration from the front, especially on slight left steer. I have removed both drive shafts and had the inner cv joints reconditioned. But the sound remains. I am a little concerned that there was still some play in the joints (left more than right) when returned to me. There is no play in the outer cv's or wheel bearings. Any ideas please anyone? Thanks Simon Quote
Guest Andy Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Maybe no play in the wheel bearings, but they might be dry(no grease) causing the humming sound. Quote
Guest shackers Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 Hi Simon... I have come across this humming noise before and found it to be Dirty Caliper pistons, sticking/binding. Not to say this is the case but that is the typical noise. When you say Vibration!, is this Steering wheel vibration because if it is I would say that you have, Grease! or some type of contamination on your discs.. Jack up the front of your Galaxy take the front wheels off and spin the disc.. it's not going to cost you anything and this will allow you to comfirm my concern.. the disc on that side could be warped, the whell itself buckled? or just a matter of Tracking. It's just my point of view but the symptoms you are saying would/could suggest this. Another thing that it could be, although a daubt. The Noise could be from the Power Stearing, Fluctuation in fluid pressure but this is more like a Trumpet noise, this is not a major problem and can be easily fixed my changing the High Pressure pipe. Once you have the wheels off and can hear the noise [hopefully] this will also give you a good idea as to weather it could also be a bearing... that I daubt also... Let me know how you get on.. shackers Quote
Guest SimonG Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 It turned out to be the wheel bearing! Sounded just like a knocking cv that I have experianced many times on vw golfs. Thanks for the advice. Simon G Quote
