First off - Hello! (first port on here).

I joined yesterday afternoon and blew the engine last night  Jinxed?

It started off sounding like a tappet was going off, which got worse, much worse!

I eventually pulled over as I thought I was about to put a valve through a piston.

I called out the RAC and the chap that turned up is certain it's not a tappet, it's a big end bearing that's gone.

The oil was low but not below the lower dip-stick mark. The oil warning light did flash at me during some heavy breaking at one point though.

So:

How hard is it to whip a P-reg 2.0l engine out and replace it with one from a breaker?

I am sure the engine is not as was used in the Sierra as that engine barely met the emissions targets in the 80's so theres no way the same engine could be reliably used in a modern vehicle, also I am sure if you do a search someone has already tried this and failed.

As for your engine why not just pull it out and get it reconned it cant that far gone if you stopped and called the recovery.

Sure I am guessing a bit but after thirty years involved with motors I would be definitely looking to strip and re-build if the cost of a replacement was nearly half a grand.

Yes, the engine will com out with the gearbox if you rip the cars face off (as the breaker suggested), and yes a standard engine hoist is fine. If you have limited tools and space then I think this job is beyond you.

I would use a garage which works on taxi's, since the Gal is widely used and the mechanics know it well, I would have thought you could get a guaranteed recon lump for not much more than

Update!

Chap in Wales (known to the in-laws) will pick up the car, take it back to Wales, totally recondition the engine, guarantee it for 12 months / 20,000m for just over

Guys i am in the situation of do i replace my engine in my well loved gal..axy or scrap it.

I am in the Basingstoke area, and if anyone knows of someone to do the work, or let me have a go with them i would be more than greatfull and pay em! Obviously space and tools would be needed for the works.

It is in the ford garage at the mo - Gowerings and to quote the guy on the phone "oh it'll be thousands for a new engine and at least 1700 for labour!" im thinking I like the prices above a lot more!

Help please! - if not does anyone want it for spares (minus engine)?! its got a new spare with sticker still on - although lower tyre rating i think.

They are going to charge for storage i think so speed is of the essence,

Well, I've taken my time to get back you you, but here goes.

The guy that did the recon Just outside Cardiff (recommended to the mother-in-law) has been an absolute pain the the you-know-what.

I still get a puff of smoke when I turn it over, even though I was told the barrels have been 'done'. When I asked about it he shrugged and said that they go off site for that work. Hmmmmm.

He said I need a new clutch. OK I said (checking the wallet). It's just started to squeal. Oh, what is that strange clattering noise that has been there since it was returned to me?

And it still drinks oil.

He kept hold of the car as he was having trouble sourcing a pulled and wasn't happy giving it back without the change (checking wallet again, I give the go ahead). So why did it snap the belt on the way from Edinburgh to Cardiff? Hmmmm, the only pulleys I saw were both old and one had shagged bearings (out with the wallet).

The air-con has since been re-gassed but doesn't work. Not really a thing that could be included in an engine overhaul I suppose.

Moral of the story: buy a second hand engine.

I suppose not all re-builders are this bad, but I'm still smarting!
