Has anyone tried lubricating the wiper spindles without removing the mechanism? This afternoon I took the blades & arms off, removed the circlips and washers and, with the wipers running, squirted in some WD40. With a bit of pressure the spindles dropped 5-10mm and I applied more oil/WD40 until they were both quite lose. Put it all back together again and see how it goes!

After stripping mine down twice now due to crap grease used first time round, I give them a good spray of WD40 or 3-in-1 oil every time I check fluid levels on the car. Got it down to a fine art now without having to take the wiper arms off. Just need a good aim to hit the right bits! It's certainly kept them running smoothly since early summer!

Can't help thinking that with a circlip, washer and O ring in place not a lot of lubrication is going to get down to the spindle, but you never know .....

When my wipers started to go slow, then start-stop it was a day before the MOT, so I dowsed the spindles in WD40, it worked for the MOT and a few days afterwards, and then they started stuttering again. Taking them apart I realised that spraying them wasn't really touching the surface, they were corroded at the base with black hard grease remnants all over the spindle and its housing. The spindles needed seriously cleaning before smothering with grease and putting them back together.

 

I have tried to make sure the wiper spindle top and bolts have a constant layer of grease to stop moisture penetration, they are still working a year and half later, but time will tell!

You'd be surprised where you can get the WD40 straw with a little effort! :o

I Drilled a small hole ~1.5mm in the casting about a quarter of the way down below the spindle. Every few weeks I squirt some GT85 oil into the hole using a small pipe. With a longish pipe (15-20cm) it can be done without removing the wiper arms and capping.

I've been thinking about doing the same if (when!) I have to remove the whole assembly again. Nice to know somebody's tried it successfully.

think I will have a go before anything bad happens - what sort of lubrication would you recommend?? (not taking it all apart - just removing arms)
