Smokey Booster Heater

I fitted the booster heater glow plug last w/e and this morning it fired up for the 1st time since I've owned the vehicle (Bought it Nov 2005). I don't know how long it has had a faulty glow plug. The temp reading on the dash was 7.5 Deg C.

 

However it produced clouds of whitish/Greyish smoke for about 10mins after it fired up, the little exhaust did get hot so I guess it is burning the diesel.

 

Question, is this normal behaviour when the booster fires up 1st thing in the morning or is there a fault or is it just because it hasn't fired up for a considerable amount of time and will settle down in a few days.

 

On the plus side the engine warm-up time did reduce dramatically as my morning journey is in slow moving traffic. Got funny stares from cars nearby they though my car was on fire or something.

 

I fitted an uprated BERU glowplug as recommended by a fellow forum member who supplies the plugs

 

Any help advice most appreciated.

Dalbir, imust be one of the fortunate as mine has never smoked. Have a read of this ..should give you some pointers

Mine smoked a lot after I replaced the glowplug too. At a guess yours too would have a load of old unburnt oil inside it to burn off. If its now getting hot it will clear up.

Had loads of smoke from mine recently ran low on diesel the other day so reckon it's the dregs from the tank. Had some funny looks!!!

Mies doesnt smoke, it just smells fumey for some strange reason :lol:

The smell will be burnt fuel. The boosters heater's exhaust is directed towards the central rear of the car which gets blown away when driving. While stationary it will gather beneath the car and waft up it's sides.

Mine doesn't smoke and i only get a smell when i switch it off and thats only when it hasn't switched itself off, i fitted a new plug supplied by mr blackett and all is well :lol:

Mine smoked when the glow plug was first replaced but it cleared up after a running for a few minutes and doesn't smoke at all now. From what has been said in other threads, if the smoke doesn't stop you probably need to open it up and clean the combustion chamber.

 

My smells a bit too.
