31Firefly Posted November 16, 2006 Report Posted November 16, 2006 Hi, Not only do i have a flashing glow plug light, i have an abs light now on. When applying the brake there is a sound of metal grinding. Has anyone any ideas as to what this could be. I posted earlier with " Flashing glow plug light" but have never got round to changing glow plugs yet. ( Got pulled over by traffic police to give me a ROUTINE CHECK on my astra van, and need to sort a couple of things on that first for its MOT) any help will be appreciated ThanksG Quote

The VW floating caliper design is well known for locking up (especially on the offside rear for some reason). It could be that the inner pad is down to the metal, while the outer pad still looks OK. 31Firefly Posted November 17, 2006 Author Report Posted November 17, 2006 Sorry, my brakes have all been renewed fairly recently pads and discs all round. The problem seems only to be around when driving in heavy rain. The light is not on just now and there is now grinding noise or feel from the brakes as the weather is dry. ????G Quote

The caliper is actually an ATE design, and is common on VAG Group cars, Mercedes and BMW. I have owned several VW's and Mercedes' and never known one to lock up or sieze. In my experience, the earlier fixed caliper, twin piston design was more prone to siezure - more potential leak paths too. To be fair, this was usually caused by the brake pads siezing in the housing, rather than the pistons themselves, and if properly lubricated on assembly, rarely happened. The later designs of pad mounting with the floating calipers are much better in this respect. The flashing glowplug warning light will be caused by a faulty brake light switch. Quote
