OK, this year's TG survey puts the Sharan/Galaxy/Alhambra in the following positions (out of 137):

Alhambra: 99th

Galaxy: 129th

Sharan: 137th !!

In my opinion, it just goes to show that it's all down to EXPECTATION.

VW owners expect their car to be 100% reliable FOR EVER and for it to be bulletproof. Something about their Sharan fails to meet their critieria of perfection, so it gets a very low score.

Ford owners expect their Galaxy to be as predictable as the Fiesta/Escort/Sierra/Mondeo/Granny or whatever they grew up with. The Galaxy fails to meet their criteria of predictability, so it ges a lower score than all of the other "Fords".

Seat owners consider their vehicles to be "Spanish" in origins and because they share the marque with the old Ibiza, the Panda-type-thingy and the Cordoba etc, their expectations might be that their Alhambra will have the same pedigree. The Alhambra impresses them, although it squeeks and breaks down sometimes, so it ends up with a higher score...

That's my opininon - most of the "clan" are identical in almost every way (well the diesels are), so has anyone else got any better explanations of the considerable different positions of the three vehicles???

most surprised with the sharan result, last 2 i had , never gave a problem and the dealers were always ok.

not really surprised with galaxy position, our galaxy tdis never caused a problem, but no doubt the dealers let the side down.

I think you're right Iain.

The cars are tantamount to the same thing, same parts there or thereabouts, so the differences can only be perceptions and the dealer network.

Although that in itself doesn't fully explain everything.... VW dealers worse than Ford? Seat dealers better than Ford?

I think the survey is flawed m'lud!

I'm sure the survey IS flawed.

They said on Top Gear tonight that 90% of people claiming to own a Ferrari in the survey were fibbing - the survey company checked details of all submissions with DVLA !!

Well I did my bit and voted a very high score for the Galaxy on the poll. Guess I was outnumbered. It is true about expectations though, the top 10's of the JD Power surveys always tend to be the blue rinse brigade type cars and those drivers expectations tend to be lower.

CasaPaulo,

You're Alhambra might have a lower list price, but you get a smaller discount, so yours probably cost the same as, if not more than, equivalently-specced Galaxies, which, incidentally look better in any case (IMHO).

Iain,

I've posted several times why I bought the Seat over the other two. At THAT time, it gave me the best value for the spec I got.

Paul's House' points are valid too...

I did my bit for high scores except for dealer service and aircon reliability.

What I find very puzzling is that for Galaxy, Alhambra and Sharan, only 2 stars out of 5 were voted for practicality/comfort. Now, nobody seems to complain about comfort, so why do almost all owners in the survey think that their MPV is impractical???

Me - I can't think of a more practical vehicle. 5, 6 or 7 people on board, loads of plants/paving slabs etc from garden centre/DIY places, a bicycle or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 without removing their wheels, loads of garden refuse. (OK, not all the above at the same time, but....)

How an MPV is not pratical is beyond me unless your trying to park in a space that is the same size as a shopping trolley :(

I think the places simply reflect the numbers on the road I know round here there are loads of Sharans and Galaxies on the road so they get more feedback were as there are hardly any Alhambra's so very little feed back, I would have thought they would look at responses to numbers sold and take that into account.

1. Normal content people don't bother with surveys.

2. Top Gear and other car mags are effectively controlled by the manufacturers who give the most freebies (exotic trips, chance to lark about in exotic cars etc)

3. JD Power survey? :( :D Great Joke! think chrysler alpine..... :(

4. Who cares if they knock down our favourite car? It means the manufacturer tries harder, more discounts for us etc. etc. :D
