Glowplug? Aux Heater? Metering Pump? Which Is It

Please please please could someone clarify for me what might be wrong with our 2003 SEAT Alhambra diesel. I am a mother of 3 under 5 with no hands on mechanical expertise. I have read all the messages about glowplugs, aux heater and its components but remain confused as to which is causing the blue grey smoke from our car.

 

THE PROBLEM:

Car producing huge amount of blue grey smoke on short distances, while waiting at red lights, idling, and when the engine stops.

 

I do hear the 'jet engine' hum when the car is turned off.

 

I have just spent 202.00

I think if they diagnosed the fault charged you and didn't correct it then its down to them - you didn't walk in and say - 'replace my glowplug' they need to take more responsibilty than changing things at your cost until it is corrected

i was getting this on my galaxy casey

 

loads of smoke when doing a short trip,sitting at lights etc..

 

i had fords uprated glowplug fitted not the beru one,even though they do the same job i would of thought.

 

the booster heater is now fine,hardly any smoke,and booster heater is working great

Thank you, I will await any further replies to my post and tally all your suggestions before I call the manager back. I assume they will have recorded the part number somewhere on their records?! He did say that if it is not the glowplug they will reimburse by 200

Wish it all went that smoothly yesterday when they changed mine! I will ask about which part was used to try and ascertain if the upgraded part was used.

Hello NikpV: I found the part number on the invoice: S7M3963319A Glow Plug - Do you think this is the right upgraded one?

 

It also says on the invoice: Checked vehicle for blue smoke, found glow plug in pre-heater faulty. Removed heater unit, Replaced faulty glow plug. Rebuilt and refitted unit to vehicle. Stripped off scuttle panel. Bridged out temp sensor, to clean out diesel in system. Tested ok.

might be worth given the seat parts dept a call,and asking them for the part number,for the normal plug

 

and ask if they do a uprated plug and if so the part number

 

then you will defo know which one you have

With fond memories of my booster heater failures you might find this helpful casey:

 

Give it a few runs to see if the smoke gradually peters out. We had this problem twice and it did take a day or two for the smoke to die down. Initially, it's a bit disappointing when you get the car back from the dealer and you're still getting plumes of smoke.

 

Do you do a lot of short runs? I wonder if that shortens the life of the booster heater glow plug.

 

Whatever, I'm afraid that this is one of the reoccuring faults of what otherwise is a lovely car.
