Vanbursta Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 Whilst browsing the forum earlier, I came across a post left by someone who was commenting that they had to repair lots of things on their Galaxy, got me thinking how many parts I have had to replace and I wondered if anyone can beat this:- PS Doesn't include Quote

Steve S. Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 Dear Vanbursta, Strewth! There's a lot of paper there! But, such is the cost of sheer luxurious motoring!Presumably, if your Galaxy was of mere standard appointments you wouldn't bother!!!!????!!! Mind it does show how much you can get through in the never ending quest to get everything as it should be. Regards Steve S. P.S. I think I've discovered a Dutch gentleman that repairs C/C modules for 50 euros! So the cost keeps coming down! With a bit of luck I'll run into a bloke round the corner that mends them for nothing! Guest HairyPlateEater Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 I can see this thread now being the used as the standard reply to the age old "I'm looking to buy a Galaxy, what should I be looking out for ...." question from newbies! Quote

chromedome Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 Vanbursta, notice you use T.C.Harrison, Peterborough like me. Have they bent your sills yet? Done mine six times now. Quote
littlenewt2067 Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 We got our Galaxy 2.8 when it was 8 months old and have done about 24000 miles in 2 1/2 years. we have paid for 2 services, 4 new tyres and put a tow bar on it and until Sunday when someone knocked the door mirror off, I hadnt had to pay out for anything else. Trying to find out how to get the door card off was how I found this forum! Quote
Jimbo73 Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 I have had mine for 2 months... 1 - New wiper motor2 - Underlinks Stabilisers3 - Looking for speaker for rear parking sensor4 - Investigate noise from Steering on full lock I can see why people love these cars, I think it is great... Just hope once these are done that may be an end to it (for a while at least).... Quote

jkspoff Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 I think there is a serious design weakness in this area....When I did a web-search on Sanden compressors I came up with something a bit odd. Apparently, the "V" or "H" in the compressor part number (eg SD7V16) refers to its intended working orientation.....does this mean that it should ideally be used with a vertical axis???? Is this why they all fail?? Thats an interesting theory, and one that would be worth looking into further. As my dealer has stated that 8/10 galaxys have had new compressors fitted, I wonder if its a Ford modified part design failure. Quote
Vanbursta Posted November 8, 2006 Author Report Posted November 8, 2006 Hi Chromedome, I get parts from TC harrison, but there is no way I would let them anywhere near my car, I use a local garage called SKS autos, professional garage and the people are good at the job, they will also let you haggle a bit over prices. I can highly recommend them. Sills were bent when I bought the car, quickly remedied with a dolly and hammer when I got the chance and no problems since. Quote

As my dealer has stated that 8/10 galaxys have had new compressors fitted, I wonder if its a Ford modified part design failure. Trouble with trying to go further is that the SD7V16's (as far as I can tell) are now made in Japan and the website is not very informative at all. I was really looking for a proper specification (interface drawing, pressure, flow, etc) to see if it was worth designing an adaptor plate to take an alternative unit...probably with a slightly longer belt. What I don't know is whether other similar compressors are any better. It could just be that the problems lie with the molecules of R134a being so much smaller than the old R12 hence pump clearances having to be very tight? I've contacts with a landrover dealership and salvage yard....It would be handy if one of theirs would turn out to be a reasonable match with better reliability! Quote
Vanbursta Posted November 8, 2006 Author Report Posted November 8, 2006 You could well be onto something with the molecular structure, most people don't realise that aircon gas needs to be topped up every couple of years, mainly due to the fact that refrigerant gas has smaller molecules than the rubber in the circuit, therefore some gas escapes to atmosphere over an extended period. I also know if you convert from R12 to R134a that you need to change seals in the compressor, expansion valve and o rings throughout. Quote
